Will John Cena Get WWE Title Reign No. 16 in 2016?

In 2016, John Cena will turn 39 years old; does WWE’s aging “golden boy” still have enough gas in the tank for another title run?

To put it plainly: John Cena had an amazing 2015. Not only did he have one of his best years ever, but it didn’t include a run with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Sure, he had a great match against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, but that dastardly Jon Stewart messed everything up by hitting Cena with a chair, and costing him the match.

Cena’s momentum picked up when he feuded with Rusev for the U.S. title, eventually beating the Bulgarian Brute at WrestleMania 31, and starting his string of fantastic “U.S. Open Challenge” matches that were almost always the highlight of Raw, each week. His opponents included: Sami Zayn, Neville, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Stardust, and even Kane answered the call.

Now sure, you could say Cena’s matches were awesome, because his opponents – in particular, Owens, Cesaro, and Neville – were the main reasons why and they carried Cena to those high-quality matches. I would say that’s just being a hater, because if you watch those matches, Cena does just as much to entertain the fans, I mean the guy busted out a Yoshi Tonic for crying out loud!

Wrestling websites’ “Wrestler of the Year” lists are slowly trickling out and we’re already seeing Cena nearing the top of those lists, which include the likes of AJ Styles, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Shinsuke Nakamura, and even, Sasha Banks. At 38, Cena was able to string together some of his finest work ever, and do it without being in the main event picture.

Due back in December, there have been rumors that Cena’s work schedule going forward will become a bit lighter, so the question becomes, does he get his 16th world title reign in 2016? To put it plainly, yes, he will, but let’s take a look at when he could actually run with the title, based on potential plans already in place.

More from John Cena

At this moment, Roman Reigns is champion and will hold the title through WrestleMania 32 for sure; simply because he’s being built up into a top star. Before Seth Rollins went down, it seemed likely that a triple threat between Brock Lesnar, Rollins, and Roman Reigns would main event of the show, but now Brock or Reigns will get the title before WrestleMania, and either way, Reigns will leave as WWE Champion, with a longer title reign in his future.

Depending on how fans take to Reigns, which is getting better (beating up Triple H at TLC turned the tide), maybe Cena could take on Reigns at SummerSlam, and winning the title there. Towards the end of the year, it’s usually a pretty dead period for the WWE, so to gear up for 2017; maybe they will put the strap on Cena, to help set the scene for the next year. With only Sheamus, Reigns, and Lesnar in the 2016 WWE title picture, it seems likely Cena can squeeze in there for a short run of his own; he definitely deserves it, after the awe-inspiring 2015 he had.
