When it comes to John Cena, there’s no doubt that he is one of WWE’s greatest stars. John Cena is a 16-time World Champion, and he was at one point the face of the WWE. As Cena is getting older, he has not been in the 20×20 squared circle as much as he used to be. In fact, for a prominent star, Cena was constantly wrestling, as taking time off never seemed to be an option for him. Cena wouldn’t be gone for long, even in his significant injuries, as he would rehabilitate faster.

At the moment, Cena has been in the Hollywood world as he would partake in notable films such as F9, and now, he is the main star of Peacemaker, where he plays the titular character.

With Cena’s acting and wrestling schedule in question, there is a possibility that Cena could return to the WWE this summer. Cena returning this summer would be perfect timing as he is approaching his 20th anniversary with the WWE. During an interview with Adam Glyme of Adam’s Apple, Cena hinted that he is interested in a return to the company that made his character.

“I know I turn 20 pretty soon in WWE years, so that’s a pretty big thing,” Cena stated. “And from a pretty storied class of folks: Batista, Randy Orton, Brock, who turned 20 this year. So I’m aware that that’s coming around the corner, and who knows?”

“But it’s one of those hard truths … there’s a lot of cool stuff going on, and I don’t want to say no to any of these opportunities on my doorstep”, Cena said. “So, I don’t know when I’ll be back, but hopefully, it’s soon. I’ve been gone for too long.”

If Cena were to come back, there are plenty of wrestlers he can start a program with, leading to one of WWE’s most enormous premium live events, SummerSlam. Here are some opponents in mind for Cena.

4) Theory

Theory is currently the WWE United States Champion. He is also now the youngest United States Champion in WWE history at 24. Theory has even implied how much he would love to have a match with Cena in numerous interviews.

If Cena does make his return on his 20th anniversary, which is the June 27th episode of RAW, maybe a program can start between Cena and Theory for a potential match at SummerSlam.

One way WWE can set up a program between Cena and Theory is to have maybe Theory interrupt Cena in the ring and plant a match at SummerSlam for the WWE United States Championship. A match for the WWE United States Championship would be interesting since it is the championship Cena once made famous throughout the time, where Cena would issue open challenges for that title.

3) Brock Lesnar

Brock Lesnar and John Cena have so much history with one another. Most wrestling fans would say that if Lesnar never left the WWE in his first run, Cena would have never been the top star. As the history between these two top stars, they would collide in bloody matches such as Extreme Rules and even championship matches. SummerSlam could be the perfect show for another classic between Lesnar and Cena.

For instance, SummerSlam is also where Lesnar coined Suplex City when beating Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. SummerSlam is the venue where Lesnar made his return last year, in which he delivered a massive german suplex and F5 to Cena after the show went off the air.

2) Edge

Suppose another superstar has a significant amount of history with John Cena; it has to be Edge. Both Cena and Edge were going back and forth against each other during the Ruthless Aggression Era in 2006. It was even at SummerSlam where these two stars collided with each other for WWE Championship, in which fans witnessed Edge getting the win.

Maybe Cena could overcome that wrong by beating Edge at SummerSlam. In the May 23rd episode of Raw, Edge referenced Cena he mentioned how he wasn’t placed at the top of the mountain like Cena.

As Edge is more ruthless and vicious being a leader of his villainous group, The Judgment Day, there is so much wonder about what’s to come if Edge were to target Cena after his program ends with AJ Styles.

1) Finn Bálor

If WWE wants to go a unique route, a match between John Cena and Finn Bálor can occur. Last year on the Road to SummerSlam, Cena, and Bálor was in pursuit of Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship. As Finn was determined to sign the contract to face The Tribal Chief, Cena jived in and took Bálor’s opportunity of winning the Universal Championship. For storyline purposes, Bálor can finally get his revenge on Cena.

As Cena would go on and fail to defeat Reigns, it is without question that Bálor still has revenge in mind against Cena. It could be Bálor who challenges Cena to a match if Cena were to return on the last RAW in June.
