AJ Styles Must Defeat John Cena at WWE Money in the Bank 2016

For the sake of both AJ Styles and The Club, The Phenomenal One needs to get the best of John Cena at WWE Money in the Bank.

AJ Styles has been more successful in WWE than anyone could have imagined since his Royal Rumble debut. The fact that the man formerly known as Mr. TNA has come to WWE and already challenged for their top championship is unbelievable. And even though he was unsuccessful in his title pursuit, Styles now finds himself in a feud with the face of WWE for the last 10+ years, John Cena.

This program got off to a good start with Styles turning heel and re-joining The Club, proving that WWE hasn’t entirely bungled this faction that has so much potential. And things continued on the right track as Styles and Cena had arguably the best segment of the year last week on Raw. Among the highlights was quite possibly the best line of the year as Styles told Cena:

"“Everybody who knows this place knows that once you wrestle John Cena and lose, it’s time to get out the shovels because guys like you bury guys like me.”"

Wrestling tends to be the most entertaining when it blurs the line between kayfabe and reality, and that’s exactly what this promo achieved. That’s because Styles isn’t wrong about Cena burying other superstars, which is why Styles needs to come out victorious at Money in the Bank.

Would a loss end Styles’ career? Of course not. But losing to Cena after saying that doing so means you’re being buried? It’s not a good look. Losing to Roman Reigns was OK because it at least showed that WWE has the faith in Styles to put him in that kind of match. But if he were to lose to Cena immediately after two straight losses to Reigns, he’ll begin to look extremely weak., regardless of the magnitude of his opponents.

The one good thing about facing Cena is his opponents usually end up looking fairly strong. Even in defeat, the prevailing thought is “Hey you might have lost, but it was to John Cena. No big deal.” But if Styles is going to be taken as a serious threat in WWE, he needs to do more than just put up a fight. He needs to win and back up his declaration that he can run circles around Cena.

The Club has what it takes to be the next great faction in WWE. Their leader losing to John Cena would not be the way to kick things off, just ask the Nexus. If WWE knows what’s good for them, they’ll give Styles the win on Sunday and cement his status as a legit top guy in the company.
