Did WWE bring in championships too soon during the brand split?

WWE championships have been booked completely wrong early on in the WWE brand split, and should have been kept as they were when they were drafted.  There should’ve been no new titles introduced at this time.  So, with the way that the brand split is going, what is the difference between what it was before?

Right now, it is too soon to bring in new championships with the brand split.  Where is the importance of the championships being drafted where they were in the first place?  When you reflect back on the draft, there seemed to be some sort of importance placed being drafted where you were.  Additionally, the champions being drafted to the shows they were served the utmost significance.  With new titles being introduced, it diminishes the titles of before.  With Smackdown Live having the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, it forced Raw to come up with their own ideas of who gets to main event.

There is creative laziness and a huge missed opportunity by introducing championships so soon.  If WWE would have waited and introduced new championships a few years down the road, it could have at least two things.

Bring Credit to the Mid-Card Championship

There was an opportunity to revive the mid-card division in the main event scene.  As Raw wouldn’t have a World Championship, they would have other titles that could main event their pay-per-views.  Fans had complained for years about how unimportant the Intercontinental, United States, and Tag Team titles were.  With the brand split as the way it was, this could have been the moment to up the ante for these belts.

Imagine seeing the Cruiserweight Championship as the main event for WWE Clash of Champions.  Not only would it be something that has never been done before, but it shows that WWE has the ability to change.  Also, it brings a sense of prestige to the championship last held by Hornswoggle.  This was the perfect time for WWE to put their mid-card championship in the main event, and show that they have the talent to book a show without a world title.

The Miz is in a fantastic storyline about being overlooked on Smackdown.  This could have been a great way to bring the United States Championship back to where it once was in WCW, as well.  Rusev could have made remarks about how he’s not respected because he’s not American, and doesn’t flip around like the cruiserweights.  He could demand a main event spot because he is the best champion that Raw has, similar to how Miz is calling himself the best champion on the blue brand, despite the world title still being on the show.

Save New Championships for a Later Date

After rebuilding the current mid-card division into future main event stars, WWE should have then introduced other championships.  The key is to take advantage of what you have before you just throw other titles out as crutches.  Allowing the current championship to gain merit than having the surprise factor of what newer championships will be could have added longevity to the brand split.

Having the new championships right now isn’t the worst decision.  It does set up title versus title battles for supremacy at the big four pay-per-views.  This may have made more sense for brand crossovers to set up your biggest pay-per-views.  Plus, the titles wouldn’t always have to change hands just because there was a brand warfare.
