Was Sasha Banks’ WWE Raw ‘Bad News’ Promo Done in Bad Taste?

The “bad news” promo from Sasha Banks is receiving criticism behind the scenes. But is that heat towards the segment justified?

There may have been some heat behind the scenes from the recent “bad news” angle that Sasha Banks had for last Monday’s Raw. The question is whether the fake retirement promo was done in bad taste.

According to the folks from the Wrestling Observer, there were a number of people in WWE who weren’t happy about the promo where Banks recent segment. Banks’ speech allowed fans to think that the back injury she suffered was worse than previously diagnosed.

It turns out that the “bad news” was meant for Charlotte and that she was coming back to get her WWE Women’s Championship back.

First of all, the segment really turned out poorly. This would be the type of promo done by a heel wrestler and while Banks can probably turn to the dark side successfully, she’s a fan favorite among the WWE Universe. There’s no need to have Banks go away from being a face.

Retirement angles have been done before. Mark Henry gave a passionate promo in 2013 that teased his departure from the WWE. This was followed quickly by attacking WWE Champion John Cena. However, this one is slightly different because Henry is a veteran from the Attitude Era and it was plausible to think it was happening.

But there was no injury involved. It is understandable to consider that there might be some people who aren’t happy with the angle. The WWE has a few guys who are currently out with an injury and others might feel it wasn’t appropriate. Additionally, you have to consider the case of Tyson Kidd, who has been inactive with a neck injury for more than a year.

It is somewhat insensitive for WWE to have Sasha Banks use a legitimate injury as part of a story. But WWE has a history of having art imitate real-life situations.

Was it insensitive for the WWE to have The Miz bring up Daniel Bryan’s neck injury during the infamous Talking Smack promo? What about highlighting Shawn Michaels’ bad back in the feud with Triple H at SummerSlam 2002?

Professional wrestling will always going to attempt to blur the lines between reality and kayfabe. This is especially true as the fan base becomes more aware of things that are happening behind the scenes.

The real problem with the promo that it just wasn’t written properly. There probably wasn’t a need for Banks to tease the retirement all that much and for the segment to be drawn out like that. No one should blame Banks because she probably did as she was told by the creative team.

There is something to be said to those who found the segment was done in bad taste. A retirement angle is nothing compared to what the WWE has booked in the past.
