Ring of Honor on HDNet – 12/7/09

Cameras come into the arena and all of ROH superstars are on the apron (kayfabe friendly, heels on one side, faces on the other) welcoming ROH’s new executive producer, Jim Cornette. He announces a Pick Six contender series tournament. Over the next six weeks, there will be a series of matches that will determine who will become #1 contenders for the ROH World Title against Austin Aries.
- Austin Aries comes late to the party, and interrupts the segment saying he was, “fashionably late.” Says that Jim Cornette has an ego and is trying to stack the deck against him so he loses the ROH World Title.
- Cornette replies, “You, the champion, don’t pick your opponents, ROH does!”
- Aries says, “That he can take any one of these people. I’ll fight someone here tonight!”
- Cornette tells him that he’s got a four-way match against, Kenny Omega, Davey Richards, & Roderick Strong.
Video Package: Briscoe Bros. and Kevin Steen & El Generico talking about their upcoming tag match where the winner gets a title shot against the American Wolves at Final Battle.
#1 Contender’s Match
Briscoe Bros. (Jay & Mark Briscoe) vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico
WINNERS: Briscoe Bros. via pin fall after Jay hit the J-Driller on Kevin Steen.
Video Package: Steve Corino saying that he’s coming back to ROH because they’ve got TV now! Well that, and he wants to be the ROH World Champion.
Backstage: Kyle Durden with Davey Richards who’s pumped for his title shot tonight, but he’s gives us a dose of reality saying that some people act like wrestlers, and then there are some people who actually are wrestlers!
Four-Way ROH World Title Match
Austin Aries (Champion) vs. Kenny Omega vs. Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong
WINNER: Austin Aries via pin fall after kicking Roderick Strong off a pin fall and stealing the victory with a pin on Davey Richards.
- After the match, Tyler Black comes back to ROH after Austin Aries burned his face, and he’s pissed!

QUICK THOUGHTS:
Glad to see that Cornette comes in and there’s instant title shots in the works. Austin Aries is a weasel and I’m glad that they’re going to force him into facing legit contenders.
The tag match was fantastic! I swear, every time I watch ROH, I see some move that I’ve never seen before! In this one, Kevin Steen hit a version of a Brain Buster on Mark Briscoe where Briscoe’s head landed on his knee! I about lost my mind when I saw that!
I’m not a huge fan of four-way matches. Sometimes they can be exciting, but it’s just annoying when it turns into a one-on-one match for a few minutes, then someone breaks up a pin, throws the guy out of the ring, and repeat the sequence again. The main event was mostly this pattern for a majority of the match. A few high spots that were exciting: German Superplex by Davey Richards on A Double, and Kenny Omega hit an Electric Chair, German Suplex on A Double as well.
