Friday Night Smackdown! – 1/15/10
Last night, Smackdown was headlined with a #1 Contenders match for the World Title with a Steel Cage Match! Here’s how the show went down:
Video Package: Look back at last week’s #1 contender match that abruptly ended when both Rey Mysterio & Batista were attacked in the darkness.
Chris Jericho walks to the ring and is very upset after what happened to him on Monday night RAW. He’s got the bruise on his face to prove that he was clocked by Mike Tyson. Expresses his displeasure on the mic and still continues to say that he’s the best at what he does and is going to win the Royal Rumble.
Chris Jericho vs. John Morrison
WINNER: Chris Jericho via pin fall after hitting the Code Breaker
- Mid match, Drew McIntyre came down to ring side for a better view, and throughout the match he drew the attention of Morrison causing a distraction.
Video Package: Last week CM Punk saved a soul to become part of his Straightedge Society.
CM Punk & Luke Gallows come to the ring to repeat last week’s successful demonstration.
- Gallows speaks, “I know change can be hard… all you need is straightedge and CM Punk!”
- Punk smiles and says, “When I win the Royal Rumble, It’ll be an accomplishment for the Straightedge Society and for CM Punk!”
- Punk selects a man from the crowed, named Trevor, and has him pledge to accept the straightedge lifestyle, then shaves his head.
- Punk finishes the segment by saying, “No more weakness! One more person who is better than you!”
#1 Contenders Match for the Tag Team Titles
CM Punk & Luke Gallows vs. The Great Khali with Ranjin Singh & Matt Hardy vs. Hart Dynasty vs. Cryme Tyme
WINNERS: CM Punk & Gallows via pin fall after Gallows hit the 12th Step on JTG.
Backstage: Josh Matthews is at Batista’s locker room and asks him to comment on both the match tonight with Rey Mysterio and if he’s afraid of The Undertaker. Batista tells him he has no comment and threatens him if he comes back.
The Undertaker comes out to the ring, “The darkness of The Undertaker will continue to dominate and collect souls like I have for the past two decades… It doesn’t matter who wins tonight. Whoever survives the cage, will NOT survive me!”
- Taker then addresses Shawn Michael‘s challenge for a Wrestlemania rematch, and he says, “I’ve decided to come to RAW and give you my answer personally.”
Mickie James vs. Beth Phoenix
WINNER: Mickie James via DQ after Beth refused to break a 5-count with Mickie stuck in the Tree of Woe.
- After match, Layla & Michelle McCool came to the ring and attacked Mickie James. Beth Phoenix walked away and let them beat her down.
Backstage: Josh Matthews speaks with Dolph Ziggler who claims, “I’m on a roll, and after I beat Kane again tonight, I’m rollin’ into the Royal Rumble and I’m going to win!”
Dolph Ziggler vs. Kane
WINNER: Kane via pin fall after hitting a Chokeslam
Video Package: John Cena as the Grand Marshal of the Fiesta Bowl
Backstage: Josh Matthews catches up with Rey Mysterio who’s on his way to the ring. Rey comments, “I’m walking into this match with a dream, and when it’s all over it won’t be a nightmare, it’ll be a dream come true!”
Cage Match – #1 Contender for the World Title
Batista vs. Rey Mysterio
WINNER: Rey Mysterio via escaping the cage and kicking the door into Batista’s head as he was trying to escape simultaneously
QUICK THOUGHTS:
I cannot help but stress that while Punk & Gallows “saving people” give them a TON of heat from the crowd, it also wastes a TON of time on the program that could be spent on wrestling! I didn’t expect to see them win the tag team match for the #1 contender spot. I figured that would go to the Harts.
The main event cage match was alright. Not the best cage match I’ve ever seen, but not the worst either. I just love how they keep having Batista lose matches he’s been dominating in because of his arrogance!
