Smackdown – 4/9/10

Video Package: Last week, Chris Jericho goes on a rant about beating Edge at WrestleMania to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.  Edge attacks him.  Out of nowhere, Jack Swagger attacks Edge and cashes in the Money in the Bank case to become the NEW World Heavyweight Champion.

Jack Swagger comes to the ring, “Last week I shocked the world… tonight, Edge and Jericho will compete to see who faces me at Extreme Rules… I’m a changed man for the better in every way… some people were borne to be champions.  I’m one of them… I deserve to be champion.”

• Interrupted by John Morrison, “Deserve to be a champion?  You got lucky one night… you didn’t look like a champion on RAW (shows video package)… you look like the same Jack Swagger to me!”  Morrison then makes fun of his look and his lisp!
• Swagger is pissed, “I’m here standing as World Heavyweight Champion, and your only claim to fame is standing in the shadow of The Miz.  You’re just a bitter rockstar who’s jealous of my accomplishments!”
• Morrison responds, “Well at least I don’t have a speech impediment!”
• Swagger gets upset again and gets dumped out of the ring.

Non-Title Match

WINNER: Jack Swagger via pin fall after hitting the Gut Wrench Power Bomb

Backstage: Chris Jericho is venting his frustrations to his NXT Rookie, Wade Barrett when Swagger walks in after his match, “Did you see that?!?  I’m pulling for you tonight Chris.  The only reason why I cashed in against you and not (John) Cena, you were hurt.  It was a sure thing!”

• Jericho pissed, tries to take the belt away claiming that Swagger is NOT the champion.  “You can walk around with your spikey blonde hair, your suit, and your stern look, but that doesn’t make you Chris Jericho.  That doesn’t make you World Champion!”
• Swagger chuckles to himself, “THIS (belt) makes me World Champion!”

Shad Gaspard comes to the ring.  He shows video package of his attack of his Cryme Tyme tag team partner, JTG.  “That was all me!  Some of ya’ll can relate… Somebody’s always standing in your way… step up and take what you deserve and don’t let people like JTG stand in your way… this is my time!

• JTG runs out to the ring.  Shad bails out of ring.  JTG follows and gets booted in the face by Shad.

Non-Title Match
Drew McIntyre vs. Matt Hardy
WINNER: Drew McIntyre via pin fall after hitting the Future Shock DDT on the floor

Straightedge Society comes to the ring… Serena takes mic first, “Look at all you sinners and addicts… if you would just allow yourself to find straightedge through CM Punk, you can take your meaningless lives and make them better!”

• Luke Gallows speaks next, “The movement of cleansing is worth a lifetime of pain…  through CM Punk I was saved!”
• Punk then takes the mic, “There was a time where these two were just like you… but then I came along, and I saved them… there was once a time where I saw despair and loneliness, just like I see in your eyes Darren Young.  I know everything you’re going through…  you’re dead last and on the verge of being eliminated from the competition… I can save you…  I’m giving you a choice (Gallows sets up chair).  No more drinking.  No more smoking.  No more parties… Your hair represents your weakness… Are you ready to accept straightedge into your life?  Are you ready to accept me as your savior?”
• Darren Young gets up out of the chair, “You know what?  I’ve changed my mind.”  He shoves Punk down, and is attacked from behind by Gallows.  Turns into a three on one beat down.
• Punk sees the clippers and has Gallows hold him down.  Just then Rey Mysterio comes out to save Young from having his head shaved.  Rey takes the mic and accepts Punk’s challenge from last week and is excited to “shave Punk’s head and put an end to the Straightedge Society!”

Caylen Croft & Trent Barreta come to the ring and introduce their tag team as The Dude Busters. They gloat about how much skill they have and how they got to the WWE on their own and not on their family’s name.

Croft & Barreta vs. The Hart Dynasty (DH Smith & Tyson Kidd with Natalya)
WINNERS: Harts via submission after DH Smith locked Barreta in the Sharp Shooter

Backstage: Josh Matthews is with Dolph Ziggler and asks, “How does it feel to put The Great Khali to sleep?”

• Ziggler responds by locking the Sleeper Hold on Matthews and making him go nighty-night.

Backstage: Edge is approached by Jack Swagger who says, “I’m pulling for you man.  If you get by Jericho, I’m going to do what he couldn’t do and put you back on injured reserve!”

• Edge talks frankly to him, “When I cashed in my first Money in the Bank, I was a lot like you.  I was cocky and over confident… I lost the title three weeks later… I’m going to beat Jericho tonight and in three weeks I’m going to beat you with a spear!”  Then comes back and says SPEAR with a lisp so Swagger can understand him!
• Swagger is pissed again!

#1 Contenders Match for World Heavyweight Title
Edge vs. Chris Jericho
WINNER: No contest due to a double count out as both men started brawling through the crowd

• After match, the brawl continued outside and inside the ring.  Jericho went for a chair and got speared!  Edge stands tall.

QUICK THOUGHTS:

Smackdown was a solid show this week.  Not great, but solid.  They put more heat on Shad Gaspard and Dolph Ziggler in their segments.  Swagger looked foolish throughout the night, but still won his match so he didn’t lose credibility.  Edge and Jericho fought to a draw essentially, so I’m guessing either we’ll have another #1 contenders match or eventually it’ll be made a triple threat.  Oh, and there was no Great Khali or diva’s on the card so the wrestling action was good!

The segment with punk was alright, but for me his segments can sometimes get long winded.  It was cool to see someone stand up to Punk and “JUST SAY NO!”  LOL!  Could it really be possible that Punk will get his head shaved at the PPV?  I’m worried… that’s been a trademark of Punk’s for a long time.
