Smackdown 5/7/10
After last week’s arrival and naming of Big Show as the new #1 contender to the World Title, how would Champion Jack Swagger bounce back from the Knockout Punch he took to the jaw? Here’s what went down last night on Smackdown:
Editors Note: Holy crap! My local TV station actually showed Friday Night Smackdown on a Friday night! What a concept!
Video Package: Last week, Jack Swagger gloated about all of his accomplishments from a majority of his life. Teddy Long named Big Show the #1 contender for the World Title, and then Big Show KO Punched the champion.
Matt Hardy comes to the ring in street clothes. Takes the microphone, “I’m here tonight whether I should or shouldn’t be… (Video Package shows of the beat downs he’s endured from Drew McIntyre)… So you never want to see me again McIntyre… I’m not going anwhere. Make me go away!”
- McIntyre comes to the ramp, “Nine months ago, Vince McMahon made me the chosen one… you’re not getting the message are you Hardy?” McIntyre approaches the ring, and the moment he steps in, Hardy pounces.
- After referees step in, McIntyre starts to beat down Hardy. Throws him to the outside and continues to punish him.
- Teddy Long comes out and suspends McIntyre. Drew continues to beat Hardy down. Teddy then strips him of the Intercontinental Title. Drew continues to beat Hardy some more. Teddy loses it and FIRES McIntyre on the spot. Security and referees escort him out of the building while doctors tend to Hardy.
Backstage: Josh Matthews asks Teddy Long about Matt Hardy’s status and the status of the Intercontinental Title, and Teddy just responds, “I don’t know what I am going to do…”
MVP vs. Luke Gallows with CM Punk & Serena
WINNER: MVP via pin fall after hitting the 305 (Jumping Facebuster)
- Mid match, Rey Mysterio jumped out of the crowd and attacked CM Punk.
Punk and the Straightedge Society get in the ring. Punk takes mic, “Rey Mysterio is a coward… I want you to come out here because I have something to say to you…”
- Rey to the ramp, “You seem upset Punk… Is it because I jumped you from behind? Where is that mystery man?
- Punk replies that Rey is blaming someone else for his problems and offers him membership in the SES.
- Rey offers Punk one more match at Over The Limit… If Rey wins, Punk’s shaved bald. If Punk wins, Rey joins the SES. Punk accepts the offer.
- Rey then says he’ll join the SES tonight if Punk were to shave his head now! Punk declines.
- Rey believes that they “Could do good together and he believes in part with Punk’s message… lead by example.” He then tells Gallows and Serena that Punk doesn’t care about them, only about himself.
Kelly Kelly & Tiffany vs. Layla & Michelle McCool with Vickie Guerrero
WINNERS: LayCool via pin fall after Layla hit’s Tiffany with a neck breaker
Backstage: Josh Matthews has Teddy Long with an announcement. Teddy is having a tournament for the vacated Intercontinental Title and he names the two matches for tonight, and the winners square off next week for the title.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston
WINNER: Kingston via pin fall after hitting Trouble in Paradise
Intercontinental Title Tournament Semi-Final Match
Christian with Heath Slater vs. Cody Rhodes
WINNER: Christian via pin fall after hitting the Kill Switch
Video Package: Fall out between The Miz and Big Show. Show is then drafted to Smackdown and is now the #1 contender for the World Title.
Jack Swagger to the ring to gloat some more about different accolades in his past… COMMERCIAL… he’s still talking! He then turns his attention to talking trash about the Big Show…
Non-Title Match
Kane vs. Jack Swagger
WINNER: Kane via DQ after Swagger used an exposed turnbuckle
- Mid match, Big Show came out to ring to be on commentary.
- After match, Swagger and Show have a stare down across the announce table. Swagger turns and gets booted in the face. He gets up and fights Kane off only to get Choke Slammed through the announce table by Big Show. Show takes the belt, gets into the ring and poses for the crowd asking, “How does it look?”
QUICK THOUGHTS:
I don’t like to read spoilers of the taped shows, but I heard through the grapevine about a possible storyline where McIntyre would be fired. I think that this could be a great thing for Smackdown because it gets Vince McMahon back on TV, it makes McIntyre more hated with the fans, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll see Teddy Long grow a spine!
I’m liking the way the Intercontinental Title Tournament is shaping up. To see Christian with a belt that means something would be fantastic, but I don’t think WWE will give it to him. It’s just like dangling something shiny in front of him that’s just out of arms reach… really mean!
Well they’re having one more match and this time if Rey loses he joins the SES… Great way to just ignore storyline WWE! You put that stipulation on Rey and Punk’s last match and just totally forgot about it in the week leading up to and the weeks after the PPV. Here’s a concept, write a story and stick to it… It’s called continuity!
Swagger bores the hell out of me now. I’m really hoping the WWE has plans to put the strap on Show at Over The Limit. I can’t bear to watch many more of his gloating promos. Tonight he claimed he was a junior chess champion, not checkers, chess! WTF!?!
