Ring of Honor – 5/17/10

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s Monday, and it’s time for some real wrestling.  You know that means I’m watching Ring of Honor wrestling on HDNet.  Here’s what went down tonight:

Video Package: From Super Card of Honor V on 5/8/10, clips from the World Championship match between ROH Champion Tyler Black and the challenger Roderick Strong.  Match won by Black, but Strong still bitter about being “screwed over.”

Josh Raymond & Christian Able vs. Kenny King & Rhett Titus
WINNERS: King and Titus via pin fall after hitting a combo Blockbuster to Power Bomb

Video Package: Look back at last week’s Pick Six qualifier battle royal, won by Austin Aries.

Video Package: Look back at two weeks ago when Austin Aries kicked Delirious in the throat and then attacked him after the match.

Claudio Castagnoli with Chris Hero, Sara Del Rey & Shane Hagadorn vs. Andy Ridge
WINNER: Castagnoli via pin fall after hitting the Unidentified Flying Opponent (UFO)

Backstage: Jim Cornette talks to us about the response to the TV Title Tournament Finals match between Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards of the American Wolves.  By popular demand, Cornette shows us a good chunk of the contest to give us a refresher.

Backstage: Kyle Durden with Colt Cabana.  Asks him about his title match next week against the NEW TV Champion Eddie Edwards.  He’s excited to get the opportunity because he had lost to Eddie Edwards in the TV Title Tournament.  He also says that he was made for TV, but isn’t so sure about Eddie Edwards.

Backstage: Kyle Durden moderating a venting session by Roderick Strong to Jim Cornette.  He’s being a little whiny bitch again thinking everyone is trying to screw him over and lying to him.

  • Cornette is getting frustrated with Strong, and doesn’t know how he’s going to be able to get through to him.
  • Interrupted by Austin Aries who “tells him the truth.”  He says that Strong has to go back to the people he trusts… HIM.
  • Strong think he needs to be number one, and slaps Aries.  Both men are restrained by referees.

Video Package: The Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana.  Today’s episode is the art of beer chugging with the Briscoe Bros. They throw money down on the table and have a chugging contest.  Cabana wins, but gets caught cheating with root beer and the Briscoes take all Cabana’s money and beat him with his own shoes.

Pick Six Contender Series Match
Kevin Steen vs. Roderick Strong
WINNER: Strong via pin fall roll up

  • As Strong is coming to the ring, Aries jumps Strong from behind.
  • Strong still gets in the ring for the match.  Steen grabs the mic and starts to praise him for all of his accolades.  Then tells him that he needs to be smart about things, forfeit this match, and live to fight another day.  Strong says, “I would rather die than forfeit to you Kevin!”
  • Mid match, Steen asks Strong two separate times if he wants to quit.  One time, Strong spits on him, and the second he starts chanting “Ole, Ole, Ole!” to piss Steen off about his issues with El Generico.
  • Post match, Steen grabs Strong back into the ring and slaps on a Cross Face that he refused to let go for a long time.
  • Tyler Black comes out to check on Roderick Strong, and it’s not well received by Roddy.

QUICK THOUGHTS:

I don’t  remember which one it was (Raymond or Able), but one of them hit a Shooting Star Cross Body in their match up against King/Titus.  My jaw dropped.  That was awesome!

Andy Ridge put up a decent fight against Castagnoli, but for the most part this match was all Castagnoli.  I love watching Castagnoli hit the UFO.  If you haven’t seen it, it’s basically an Airplane Spin and then Claudio lets go of his opponent mid spin.  The guy’s momentum carries him around a couple more times before he actually falls to the ground.  It’s just great.  Look it up on Youtube sometime.

It was good to see parts of that TV Tournament match again.  Edwards and Richards put on a hell of a show that night!

The main event was pretty one sided going the way of Kevin Steen, but when it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter who winning early, it’s who gets the pin fall.
