Smackdown! – 5/28/10
Since it was announced on Monday about Fatal 4 Way, Friday Night Smackdown had to get in the game with their own title match qualifiers. The World Champion needs three competitors for the PPV, and we’d find out who they were on Smackdown. Here’s what happened:
Teddy Long comes to the ring. He talks a little bit about Fatal 4 Way and how Jack Swagger will defend his title. He announces that Big Show automatically qualifies because he beat Swagger last weekend via DQ. Teddy makes two qualifying matches for tonight, CM Punk/Kane, and Rey Mysterio/The Undertaker.
- Interrupted by Drew McIntyre. He comes to the ring pissed off about losing his Intercontinental Championship. He bitches about how he was injured and still had to wrestle…
- Teddy goes to make a comment about Matt Hardy whooping him up after the match, when McIntyre breaks out another letter from Vince McMahon and tells Teddy to read it aloud.
- The letter informs all of us that by order of the chairman, Matt Hardy is suspended without pay until further notice.
- McIntyre says to Teddy, “If you turn a blind eye… the next letter you see will inform you of your termination as General Manager.
- Matt Hardy’s music hits and he walks to the ring with purpose. Teddy and security stop him and escort him to the back.
- McIntyre stays in the ring for a match.
Jack Swagger heads to the ring with microphone in hand saying the whole time, “And Still World Heavyweight Champion…”
Jack Swagger & Drew McIntyre vs. Big Show & Kofi Kingston
WINNERS: Show/Kingston via pin fall after Show hit the KO Punch on McIntyre
Backstage: Straightedge Society trying to console CM Punk who’s wearing a towel over his head to avoid looking in the mirror and seeing his own bald head. He knows that fans are going to mock him, but he needs to be strong and prove that he’s better than them.
Backstage: Vickie Guerrero is in her office and she spouts off somethings to Vance Archer & Curt Hawkins in Spanish. They have fifteen days left on their temporary contract to make an impact. They leave.
- In walks Dolph Ziggler. Vickie thanks him for sticking up for her last week during Christian‘s Peep Show segment. (She sounds like she’s coming on to him…) She tells him she owes him a favor and it puts him in an enviable position… He’s put in a match with Chavo Guerrero against Christian and Hornswoggle.
Straightedge Society to the ring, leading CM Punk who still has a towel over his head. He gets in the ring, hesitates a bit, but then removes the towel to reveal… a mask!
Fatal 4 Way Qualifier
CM Punk with SES vs. Kane
WINNER: Punk via pin fall after hitting a very week looking GTS
Christian & Hornswoggle vs. Dolph Ziggler & Chavo Guerrero with Vickie Guerrero
WINNERS: Christian/Hornswoggle via pin after Christian hit Chavo with the Kill Switch
- Post match, Ziggler jumped Christian from behind and locked on the Sleeper Hold. Christian went to dreamland.
Backstage: Josh Matthews looks to conduct an interview with Layla & Michelle McCool, but they kick him out of the segment. They start talking about the history of the Women’s Title and how now they’re co-champions.
Luke Gallows with Serena vs. MVP
WINNER: Gallows via pin fall after hitting the Gallow’s Pole
Fatal 4 Way Qualifier
Rey Mysterio vs. The Undertaker
WINNER: Taker via pin fall after hitting the Tombstone
QUICK THOUGHTS:
Again, I have to apologize for not being able to post this up on Saturday. The local TV station sucks balls, and refuses to show Smackdown on it’s normal day.
This was a decent episode of Smackdown. The opening tag team match was pretty good. By the time it was over, it was already about thirty minutes into the broadcast. That’s sort of sad, but when matches are decent, I’ll let it slide.
One thing I don’t get is why have a backstage segment with Archer/Hawkins about making an impact with fifteen days left on their contract and then not have them in a match on the same broadcast? That doesn’t make sense.
Punk coming to the ring and revealing a mask was just genius! I don’t know who came up with that idea, but that guy deserves a raise! They really didn’t elude to too much with the SES having to do with Rey Mysterio, so I’m wondering if the angle is getting dropped or not? Maybe in the weeks leading up to Fatal 4 Way, we’ll see Mysterio trying to get into Punk’s head a bit before his title match..?
Was it just me or did The Undertaker look fresh and quick on Smackdown? He didn’t look like he was getting old or was injured at all. He definitely had some pep in his step against Mysterio. I hope that means he’s feeling better and might get in the ring a little more often.
