Ring of Honor – 6/28/10
The “adrenaline rush” that is Ring of Honor wrestling is back on HDNet for another hour of action. This week, we had four matches, and the night was capped off with a main event featuring the ROH World Champion in non-title action. Here’s what went down:
Video Package: Highlights from Death Before Dishonor VIII show trying to get people to purchase the iPPV replay on GoFightLive.
Kevin Steen & Steve Corino come out to the ring. Steen has a mic and he starts ranting about how Dave Prazak & Mike Hogwood keep talking crap about them. So Steen & Corino have decided to give them this match off and do commentary themselves for Steen’s match.
Kevin Steen vs. Bobby Shields
WINNER: Steen via referee stoppage due to a Crossface
- Steen actually wrestled almost the entire match with the microphone in his hand… Only time he wasn’t on mic was when Shields had an offensive flurry.
Backstage: Kyle Durden gives us an update on Necro Butcher‘s condition that he has NOT been cleared by the doctors after a neck injury was suffered at the hands of The Embassy at ROH’s Pick Your Poison show. Durden mentions that Necro wants to show The Embassy a side of him they have never seen before.
Erick Stevens comes out to the ring with fellow Embassy members Prince Nana & Ernesto Osiris. He’s supposed to face Necro Butcher. Necro comes out with a bag, and takes the mic saying that with the neck injury, he’s out a lot of money because he doesn’t have insurance, and that he’s got a family to support, so he can’t afford to wrestle tonight. Claims he’s found someone who can take the fight to The Embassy.
Erick Stevens vs. Grizzly Redwood
WINNER: Redwood via pin fall roll up
- Post match, 3 on 1 beat down of Redwood. “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown comes out to save the day, but eventually the numbers game gets the best of the big man, and he’s handcuffed to the corner.
- Then Prince Nana says there’s a new member of the Embassy, and that he’s the new “Crowned Jewel.” Out walks the Necro Butcher in a suit and fancy cloak. He helps them continue the beat down of Rasche.
Video Package: More clips from Death Before Dishonor VIII. Kevin Steen defeats El Generico. Kings of Wrestling defeat Briscoe Bros. Tyler Black retains ROH World Title over Davey Richards.
Christian Able & Josh Raymond vs. Cheech & Cloudy
WINNERS: Able/Raymond via pin fall after hitting a double team top rope double knees combo
Video Package: Dark City Fight Club talk about their wrestling philosophy and how they work as a team. They pay compliments to the Kings of Wrestling who they take on next week.
Video Package: Two weeks ago, Christopher Daniels calls out both Tyler Black & Davey Richards saying that HE is the best in the world.
Non-Title Match
El Generico vs. Tyler Black
WINNER: Generico via DQ after Kevin Steen attacked him from behind
- Post match, Steen jumps in the ring to attack Generico some more, but Black hits him with a Superkick.
QUICK THOUGHTS:
The opening segment was funny. Having Steen and Corino call the match was just great. Could you imagine if they let Austin Aries do that for one of his matches..? That’d be awesome!
I never thought that the Necro Butcher would ever sell out like that to The Embassy. It almost doesn’t make sense since he’s been feuding with them for awhile now. It sort of makes sense because he’s injured, broke, and has a family to support, but considering he hates those guys, I don’t understand why he’d push his conscience/pride aside to align himself with those fools.
Tag team match was alright, but those two tag teams are very reckless, and raw. I saw a couple of stutter steps and botched punches/kicks before moves, so they have room to grow.
Main event was going really well until the finish. I’ve said before that I don’t mind run ins, but I can’t stand it when run ins ruin great matches. This one was totally ridiculous too. ROH essentially left everyone last night a little pissed off.
