1. John Cena

Who else would be No. 1?

Even as someone who enjoys watching John Cena in the ring, I can admit to myself that he’s been face for too long. Despite being a skilled enough competitor to pull off the heel role, WWE has missed out on countless opportunities to turn Cena into a bad guy.

It may not be best for finances, but Cena turning heel would shake the wrestling business at its core.

Nothing less than that would be the result.

Cena entered WWE as a heel who gained popularity for his rapping gimmick and unsettling use of a steel chain to win matches. Perhaps his most memorable heel feud came against Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship, whom he’s expected to face at next month’s Pay-Per-View.

The elephant in the room is that, for all of the hate he may receive, Cena is still the most profitable man in wrestling. Turning him heel would create a stronger appeal amongst the older generation who reject him, but it could create a negative impact on his sales amongst young fans.

Like it or not, WWE is a business and Vince McMahon lost $350 million in a single day in May, per Dan Alexander of Forbes.com. That’s the hurdle.

I digress.

Cena turning heel would create a new level of interest in WWE as a company amongst younger fans who oppose its predictability. By making the one untouchable good guy in the industry a heel, it’d do wonders for both Cena’s career and WWE as a company.

If it ever happens, it will change the trajectory of the business as a whole. Fingers crossed.
