WWE: Top 10 Heels of the Past 10 Years
5. Edge
For a majority of his career, Edge was an upper-midcard superstar with no World Title prospects. He’d gotten over as a member of E&C with Christian, and even won a plethora of individual titles, but he wasn’t a top star—not at all, nostalgically delusional fans.
And then he became the Rated R Superstar.
Edge’s turn to the dark side created one of the single most memorable heel runs in WWE history. There was genuine hatred, honest disgust and unforgettable battles between he and the company’s most over wrestler: John Cena.
Hate Cena all you want, but that feud is what took Edge from being a fan favorite to being a top of the line star.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t anything about what happened in the ring that made Edge one of the most hated men in WWE. It was the fact that he, a close friend of Matt Hardy, began dating Lita, Hardy’s ex-girlfriend.
When that hate triangle translated to WWE television, Edge became the hottest heel in the business.
Whether he was mastering the Money in the Bank cash-in, having “sex” with Lita on live television or imitating Ric Flair, Edge could do no wrong. He developed a cult following that supported his every move, all the while maintaining the hatred of millions.
Edge’s career was tragically cut short, but his impact on the business was absolutely massive.
