WWE Battleground Predictions: Divas Championship Match: AJ Lee vs. Paige

facebooktwitterreddit

On Sunday night, the “friendship” between AJ Lee and Paige will be put to the test, as the two Divas meet for the third time over the Divas Championship. This time, they both know it’s going to happen.

More from WWE

The night after WrestleMania XXX, after AJ had already defended her championship against every Diva on the roster, Paige made her debut. AJ was angered by Paige’s brazenness in interrupting her, so to embarrass her she challenged her to a fight and put her title on the line. Much to AJ’s surprise, Paige powered out of the Black Widow and hit the Paige Turner as she pulled off the unlikely win and walked out with AJ’s most prized possession.

Paige held the title for almost three months, beating challengers like Alicia Fox and Naomi, until the night after Money in the Bank, when AJ made her shocking return. AJ was able to goad the young Diva into making the same mistake she did just a few months earlier, and AJ rolled Paige up to regain the title.

Ever since AJ’s return, Paige has been acting like her friend, and AJ has done the same in return. AJ has shown no hesitation in getting one over on her Battleground opponent, and Paige has bitten her tongue every time she has.

Is Paige biding her time until the time is right? Is she capable of beating AJ again? Michael Dunlap, Lance Augustine, Jordan Campbell, Marcus Hagness, Matt Perri, Benjamin Raven, and myself, Mike Smith, have the answers. Let us know what you think in the comment section.

Michael’s Take: No reason to take the title off of Lee but it certainly feels like we’ll get some sort of Paige heel turn here. Perhaps Lee beats her clean and Paige goes off and attacks her with a chair afterwards.

Lance’s Take: I liked Paige for a little bit, and I like AJ alot since her return. I think this might be the night Paige turns heel, and we get to see where her character can grow. AJ will win here, but we haven’t seen the end of this feud.

Jordan’s Take: When Paige took the Diva’s title away from AJ Lee after Wrestlemania, I was extremely disappointed. Yes, Paige is the young talent that we are supposed to leach onto but Lee is without question the best character in the Diva’s division. That is why Lee’s return this past month was a welcomed sight. The expectation here is that Lee continues to demonstrate why she is the top character in the Diva’s division and defeats Paige on Sunday.

Marcus’ Take: I can’t imagine AJ losing the title for any reason on Sunday. She just got back, looks great and is getting a great pop from the crowd. I’m hoping this will be the new Trish-Lita rivalry in WWE and am actually excited to see the type of match these two can have. It is their third match, technically, but it’ll be their first match that will get more than a minute so I’m expecting this match to be more than a popcorn spot.

Matt’s Take: The #1 and #2 Divas going at it? Yes, please. In a Divas Division containing models-who-wrestle, these two have brought much-needed legitimacy to that division. No girly-girl stuff, no knocking somebody out with their ass, no crazy-out-of-nowhere behavior — just wrestling between the two best Divas. So, who wins? Well, if AJ is truly back, she does. Paige has some things to learn in order to be as solid as AJ is. I think AJ pulls off the win which FINALLY causes Paige to turn heel. Too bad this is a match that WWE had failed to build any heat for either.

Benjamin’s Take: The return of AJ Lee has her back where she belongs and that is on top of the Divas division. It’s time to see what Paige can do in the ring on a big stage as I hope this match gets a chance. AJ appears to be back at full speed.

The way this feud has been played since AJ’s return has reminded me of Eddie Guerrero and Batista’s feud before Eddie tragically died. AJ has played the nice, friendly and trustworthy type towards Paige and the fans are just waiting for the real AJ to show up. AJ retains in a highly competitive match and the feud continues into SummerSlam.

Mike’s Take: WWE seems to be setting up for Paige to turn heel at Battleground, which is exactly why it won’t happen. After weeks of pretending to be friends, AJ will do what she did for almost a full year, which is anything to retain her Divas Championship. Which will upset Paige and kickoff the feud we all want to see between these two, where we get both of them on the mic, and a highly-competitive match at SummerSlam, where Paige gets her big moment, and a legit title win over AJ.

For Battleground, expect some more of the fake friendship stuff, until the end when AJ wins by cheating. I wouldn’t mind seeing her do what she did to Naomi at WrestleMania, lock in the Black Widow and literally make her tap out, where the ref can’t see it.
