WWE Rumors: How Could WWE Utilize Stone Cold Steve Austin?

More from WWE

Last night on Monday Night Raw, Michael Cole plugged Steve Austin’s podcast multiple times on the show. Austin is set to interview Kevin Nash on the next show.

Wrestling Observer Radio took note of this and started speculating on what this could mean:

"It was speculated on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that there may be something brewing between Steve Austin and WWE because of how they plugged his podcast on last night’s RAW. While WWE’s website promoted Chris Jericho’s recent podcast with Triple H, it was not promoted on RAW like Austin’s podcast with Kevin Nash was last night."

Logically, you would think that WWE would have promoted Jericho’s podcast with Triple H on Raw last week since he is one of the top executives in the company. That’s what makes this interesting.

This could be the start of something bigger and could also very well be meaningless. If Austin were to return to WWE programming in some capacity, hosting Wrestlemania 31 at Levi’s Stadium would make the most sense. They had Hulk Hogan host Wrestlemania XXX earlier this year and recently had The Rock host Wrestlemania XXVII, which developed into a two year program with John Cena.

Don’t expect anything like what Rock did to happen with Austin. He has come out and said numerous times that he has no intention of wrestling, most recently in an interview with Sam Roberts of Sirius XM Radio. He suffered neck injuries during his time in WWE that could affect him even more if he takes one bad bump in the ring. Even though fans will want him back wrestling one more time, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense.

Putting Steve Austin consistently on WWE programming from the end of February through Wrestlemania 31 would certainly drive interest. How can hearing glass shattering not bring in more viewers? If you need proof, go on the WWE Network and watch his entrance in the opening of Wrestlemania XXX. Here’s when he returned in 2011.

The second option they could do is have him as a special referee for a match sometime in the future. Again, it would make most sense if it was at the upcoming Wrestlemania. Having him in that role in one of the pay-per-views in between now and April would be nice, but it wouldn’t feel as significant as it could be.

The final option is for him to be a surprise entry at the Royal Rumble. He obviously wouldn’t stay in the ring long and wouldn’t take anything close to a big bump, but the reaction from the crowd that he would get would be off the wall. Nobody would expect him to return for that event, even though WWE usually does bring back a legend or two for it.

Bringing back Steve Austin to WWE programming would be a great move. They have a good relationship, as shown by the hosting duties he was given for last month’s panel for WWE 2K15 in Los Angeles. Yesterday gave a very small hint to Austin coming back to WWE programming, let’s hope it happens.
