Randy Orton Is Perfect Challenger To Brock Lesnar
By Brian Rzeppa
In the aftermath of the injuries to both Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns, along with the fact that Brock Lesnar’s feud with John Cena set to end after Hell In A Cell next month, WWE is going to be in desperate need of someone to step up and try to their hand at capturing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. While many will point to Seth Rollins as the obvious choice, given his standing as the Money In The Bank briefcase holder and ties to The Authority, the best choice is a superstar who has very familiar with the title scene: Randy Orton.
As it stands currently, I don’t think Rollins really stands as a credible opponent to “The Beast Incarnate.” Throughout his time in WWE, he just hasn’t tallied wins over enough quality opponents to be able to make it believable that he could take down Lesnar and that’s not even considering that he still has quite a bit of unfinished business with “The Lunatic Fringe” Dean Ambrose.

The same cannot be said about Orton, a 12-time World Champion. He has conquered the likes of The Undertaker (though not at WrestleMania), John Cena, Chris Jericho, Triple H, Daniel Bryan and essentially every big name that the company has to offer; other than Brock Lesnar. Along with his historic standing in the company, he doesn’t currently have any feud going on right now as I expect the Jericho match will be a one-off type of deal so that Y2J can go back on tour with his band.
Not only is Orton a credible option, but this feud could be interesting both inside and out of the ring. Orton’s in-ring work unquestionably rates as some of the best in the company, as he just has a natural, fluid feel in everything that he does. His mix of power and finesse would make him a worthy opponent to the powerhouse that is Lesnar; plus I can imagine that I wouldn’t be the only one to go nuts if he somehow managed to reverse an F-5 into an RKO.
On the mic, Orton has occasionally been criticized for being boring or repetitive but he can definitely bring it when he needs to. A feud like this would probably be as a result of him breaking off from The Authority so he wouldn’t have the aid of Stephanie McMahon or Triple H any longer, but that ultimately be a positive thing. His work as “The Legend Killer” and against Triple H as “The Viper” was some of the best of career, and a real showcase of what he can do when he’s committed to his character.
These two happen to be some of the most accomplished superstars on the roster and despite debuting within a month of each other in 2002, they have still only went up against each other once. Compare that to Orton/Batista or Orton/Cena from the same class and it’s just stunning, as well as confusing as to why they’ve never had an extended program with one another.
With Reigns’ injury and a lack of top-level talent that would be credible to take down Brock Lesnar, it appears that WWE is limited as to what they can do. Luckily for them, they have a top-flight superstar with loads of title experience in the palm of the hands with Randy Orton, so this should be the feud that they pursue following Hell In A Cell.
