Tyson Kidd’s first run in WWE had its moments in the back end of the first decade of the 2000’s. It was highlighted by a brief, Unified Tag Team Championship run with David Hart Smith. Kidd would then become an NXT pro when the developmental brand had a bizarre reality show format to introduce the newest stars to WWE. He would then bounce around the roster in a few low-card feuds over the next couple of years before suffering a torn knee meniscus in January 2013 that would keep him out for nearly a year.
When Kidd returned from injury, there was nothing really for him to do on the WWE main roster, so he was sent down to NXT in Florida. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the former member of the Hart Dynasty.
NXT gave Kidd every chance to succeed. He was developed into the heel that the brand was lacking and thrown into the NXT Championship hunt for months.
It began with him defeating Sami Zayn and Tyler Breeze for a chance at facing the NXT Champion, Adrian Neville, at NXT Takeover. While he would lose the match, he still put on a stellar performance on the second live event at Full Sail University.
Recently, Nattie’s husband would face Breeze, Neville, and Zayn at NXT Takeover: Fatal 4-Way for the NXT Championship. He would be pinned by Neville again, but still put on another excellent performance that drew plenty of praise.
Along with his work done in singles matches, Kidd was able to develop his character and show off his personality, something that many performers who have failed on the main roster have not been afforded the chance of doing. From his antics involving his wife Natalya, to the use of his catchphrase “Fact,” he quickly got over with the NXT crowd as a classic, annoying heel that made the crowd hate him. His reaction to the crowds chanting “Nattie’s husband,” among many other things. was great heel work as well.
Now, with this “Last Chance Match” that he’s receiving against Neville for the NXT Title, it will likely end his storyline of trying to get to the top of NXT since they probably aren’t ready for a title holder change, yet. However, this does not mean that Kidd is not in the cards for more storylines, as shown by this past Raw and Main Event.
Even though he has been thrown into Total Divas angles on both shows, Tyson has been able to show off what made him look revitalized in NXT. On Monday, fans saw how he usually treated his wife on the developmental show.
Everyone could probably agree that his role was more entertaining than whatever was going on in the ring.
Then on Main Event last night, Kidd got a somewhat surprising victory over Kofi Kingston. Seeing him get a mid-card push following this would be refreshing to see. From his “Fact” promos, the harassing chants from the crowd, and his good in-ring work, he could have a pretty good feud down the line if WWE uses him properly.
The one concern is that he has a role on Total Divas. He could continue getting thrown into these type of “matches” to promote the show on Raw and be forced to stay in the low-card. There wouldn’t be anywhere else for him to go in WWE if that was the case.
Tyson Kidd’s second opportunity on the main roster will be a better one than his first stint if he is able to use the aspects of his character that were developed during his stay in NXT. If he is not given that chance, then it’s time for him to move on from WWE.
