No. 3: Rey Mysterio against the world

I remember it like it was yesterday: I jumped up and pumped my fist in excitement as Rey Mysterio hit the 619, followed by the West Coast Pop on Randy Orton to win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22. I ran into the other room, gave my father a high-five and continued to shout for joy over Rey Rey’s title win.

  • Growing up watching wrestling, Rey was always the guy I related to. He wasn’t the biggest guy in the business, but nobody had more heart. And that heart was on full display at the 2006 Royal Rumble.

Rey Mysterio entered the Royal Rumble at No. 2 and survived over 62 minutes in the annual 30-man battle royal. Mysterio eliminated Randy Orton, the No. 30 entry, to clinch a title match at WrestleMania 22.

After Orton stole Mysterio’s spot at the No Way Out pay-per-view, Rey fought and battled his way into SmackDown’s main event at the Show of Shows against Orton and champion Kurt Angle.

Mysterio got an opening late in the match and arm-dragged Angle to the outside and then finished off one of the greatest upsets in WrestleMania history.
