On Friday evening, AJ Lee announced her sudden retirement from in-ring competition in WWE. While it had been speculated months earlier, the timing was stunning as this came just five days after WrestleMania. She had just returned four weeks earlier from an injury as well.
AJ was arguably WWE’s most popular Diva. She carried the division during her 295 day reign as champion from June 16, 2013, to April 7, 2014. No Diva was anywhere close to her status during that time until Paige was called up from NXT on the night after WrestleMania 30. Those two headlined the women’s matches throughout last summer and into the early part of fall. Then Nikki Bella came along and won the title to carry the division ever since.
So, with AJ Lee being out of the picture, how does the Divas division look now?
First, we’re going to rule out the Divas who will likely never win (or will never win it again) the title. Those include Alicia Fox, Cameron, Eva Marie, Layla, Rosa Mendes, Summer Rae and Tamina. They are all either jobbers, valets or in Tamina Snuka’s case, an enforcer who has been injured and forgotten for nearly a year (although she may return soon).
