No.1:  The Macho King/Man Randy Savage

WWE.com

Every Warrior fan I think agrees that “The Macho Man” or “Macho King” Randy Savage was the best opponent of the Ultimate Warrior’s.  Warrior would even say that himself in different interviews and how much he admired and enjoyed working with Savage.

Their first major encounter would come to a head at the 1991 Royal Rumble when “Sensational Queen” Sherri tried to get the Warrior to grant “The Macho King” a match for the World Title.  Sherri would try to persuade Warrior with flirting with him – this would only anger the Warrior even more and would yell and snarl a very loud “NO!!!” into the microphone.

To answer that rejection, Savage would run out during the Sgt. Slaughter vs. Ultimate Warrior World Title match and hit the Warrior with his crystal scepter in the head allowing Slaughter to nail the champion with a knee drop to the back and winning the World Title.

The two would have more encounters with each other that would setup their big payoff match at WrestleMania VII. The hook for the match-up was that it was career vs. career – this would make the crowd guess who was actually going to leave.

They would have a back and forth match – Savage would go and hit a number of flying elbow drops and still could not win the match.  Warrior would counter with his own finishers and still could not win.  Warrior would walk around the ring and question his “gods” above and wonder if he wasn’t supposed to win.

Savage would regain his ground and attack the Warrior on the outside – this woke up the Warrior and telling the “gods” above that “NOW I KNOW”.

Warrior would hit several shoulder blocks that knocked Savage out of the ring each time.  Finally the Warrior would cover Savage with one foot for the victory.

  • The two would have another match for the World title this time two years later at Summer Slam 1992 in Wembley Stadium in England.  This time both men were “baby faces” and would have the typical build that Hogan and Warrior had for their WrestleMania VI match.

Ric Flair would try to play “devil’s advocate” in the match because he wanted his title back from Savage even claiming the Warrior might have Flair and Henning on his side to win the title.

Flair would end up showing up and would hit the Warrior with a chair while the ref was knocked out.  Savage seeing this would jump to the outside to attack Flair but would also get knocked out by the chair.

Savage would be counted out by the ref who didn’t see any of this.  The Warrior would win the match by countout – after the match Warrior would pickup Savage and the two would walk out helping each other to the back.

A tag team was formed for the next pay per view – The Ultimate Maniacs were to square off at Survivor Series against Ric Flair and Razor Ramon.  Due to personal reasons – the match didn’t happen.

Various stories have been said about why Warrior didn’t wrestle at Survivor Series – but in the latest documentary the WWE released for the Warrior’s return – Vince McMahon stated that an issue with HGH was the reason for the departure of the Warrior and thus the reason why he didn’t wrestle.
