Wrestling Matches That Didn’t Meet the Hype

No.2: WrestleMania 20: Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar w/Stone Cold as Special Guest Referee
This one I think ends up on everyone’s list of worst matches. The build up was helped with the announcement of Stone Cold Steve Austin being involved. With the desire to see Stone Cold vs. Goldberg and a lot of people calling Goldberg “WCW’s Stone Cold” when he was brought in – there was hope of these two locking up.
Then there was the Brock vs Austin King of the Ring controversy with Stone Cold leaving the WWE because he was being told to put Brock over. Until Austin told his side of the story, it was thought that Austin didn’t want to put Brock over – when reality was Austin wanted this to be a pay per view match with a proper build up to make more money for everyone.
The build up began when the two monsters came face to face at Survivor Series when the two introduced themselves to each other. Following that was the Royal Rumble where Brock came down and caused Goldberg to be eliminated in the Royal Rumble and costing him a shot at the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. The next night on Raw Goldberg demanded a match with Brock.
Before WrestleMania news broke about Brock Lesnar leaving the WWE to pursue a tryout with the NFL and there was also rumors of Goldberg’s contract being up the day after Mania and that there was no intention of resigning. The match was destined to fail despite the build and the hope for it to be something big.
During the whole match the crowd was booing both wrestlers and chanting “sell-out”, “we want Hogan”, “Austin”, and other things. Thankfully Stone Cold was the one and only man who saved this match from being run out of the building. The crowd was hot for Austin and wanted him to get physically involved.
That involvement that the fans wanted was what saved this match from being No.1 on my list. A stunner to both Brock and Goldberg plus a beer bash to the crowd’s delight.
