Memorable Moment: Squashes Honky Tonk Man in 1988

One of the most colorful, exuberant and unique superstar’s to ever compete in WWE history, the Ultimate Warrior left an emphatic legacy in his short years in the main event scene. His painted face, powerful physique energetic entrance, Warrior captured the hearts of the fans very quickly in the 1980’s, particularly down to his work at SummerSlam. It was on this stage that he burst into the major leagues in WWE, cementing himself as one of the greatest stars of the Rock’n’Roll Era of wrestling.

This legacy was founded at the very first SummerSlam, with the Honky Tonk Man, who is still the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in history, placed his belt on the line in an open challenge. With the rhythmic beat of a drum, the Ultimate Warrior charged the ring amid a rapturous ovation from the fans. This electrifying atmosphere reached its amazing climax with Warrior dropping Honky Tonk in less than 30 seconds to win the belt. Warrior would go on to reclaim that very same belt at the following year’s event, taking it back from the “Ravishing” Rick Rude.

Warrior and Rude would find themselves tangling once again in 1990, only this time the prize at stake was Warrior’s WWE Championship inside the confines of a steel cage. Rude was always able to extract the very best from his opponent’s limited in-ring skills, but it was Warrior’s charisma and personality that made this a solid main event. Warrior would again find himself in the headline act the following SummerSlam, as he made a fearsome alliance with Hulk Hogan against Sergeant Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan in a match steeped in controversy due to backstage deals. But, that didn’t stop Warrior from returning for a final WWE title match in the UK, as he defeated Randy Savage, albeit only by count out.
