Eva Marie Says She Will Be the Face of the WWE Divas Division
Despite the criticism she’s faced, WWE’s Eva Marie believes she will be the face of the Divas Division some day. Read on to find out what she’s doing to change the hearts and minds of fans.
“All Red Everything” has taken on a new meaning for WWE Diva, Eva Marie, over the last few months. Since her June debut at NXT the fans have definitely been seeing red every time she appears on TV, expressing their displeasure with boos usually reserved for the worst heels, not someone who has barely been in the squared circle. The Total Divas star with the fiery crimson hair isn’t letting any of that slow her down, and with a big SummerSlam weekend match against Carmella at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, Eva Marie spoke with Crave Online about her training, the heat she’s getting from the fans, and the future of the Divas Division.
After being signed by the WWE in 2013, Eva Marie became a key figure on the E! Network reality series, Total Divas, making that the first exposure many fans had of her. But in the time since she’s also been training at the WWE Performance Center under the guidance of (The) Brian Kendrick, and she talked a little bit about how grueling that has been.
“Obviously, I didn’t come out of the womb wrestling so I think everything was the most difficult. I’m a field athlete. My sport was soccer growing up so just putting my body in all of those different positions was definitely new and different for me. It was fun each day because we got to learn something totally different than the day before but I haven’t been able to train that consistently since I joined WWE so for me that was really putting my body through the ultimate test.”
Although she hasn’t had as many televised matches as her peers, Eva Marie already holds victories over AJ Lee, Nikki Bella, Tamina Snuka, and participated in the Vickie Guerrero Divas Championship Invitational at WrestleMania XXX. However she and Kendrick are still figuring out her in-ring style, and fans may be surprised by who she’s studying up on:
“He didn’t specifically tell me to stay with any certain style but he had me watch film from Japanese wrestling to old school matches with WWE. I watched a lot of super crazy Tajiri matches, which were insane to me because of that style. It’s so fast doing moonsault after moonsault after moonsault was pretty impressive. I just pick and choose from different matches and different eras. Things are always changing but a lot of things are the same just with different little flavors.”
While she says working in front of the close-knit NXT crowd at Full Sail University is “awesome”, Eva Marie admits to being confused by the outpouring of animosity she’s received:
“To be honest, I don’t know the root of the animosity. I’m really just trying to train and get better at my job so I can get on those girls level and be able to entertain and put on matches that everybody is happy about. That’s where I’m coming from. The funny thing is, I’m in California and in Orlando. I’ve been training at the WWE Performance Center as well. It’s just that the times I’m not in Orlando training at the Performance Center, I’m getting in the ring with Brian Kendrick. I’m doing the best that I possibly can with both situations. I’m working on the NXT live events and I go out to Orlando two weeks out of each month so that I can train.”
Regardless of how the fans feel about her now, Eva Marie firmly believes she will be the face of the Divas Division some day, saying, “Absolutely! 100 percent without a doubt. That’s the plan.”
