Who won the showdown between Rusev (w/ Summer Rae) and Dolph Ziggler (w/ Lana) at WWE SummerSlam? Read on for all the action.

Dolph Ziggler was the first introduced, with Lana by his side dressed in casual “Ziggler-esque” gear. Say so long to the business suits, sadly. As usual, Rusev came out next with his Bulgarian flag, and had to signal for Summer Rae to join him. She walked behind him every step of the way, decked out in an extremely tight, extremely glittery red skirt. A brief stare down occurred until ZIggler hit him with a headbutt to get things going, but Rusev gained the upper hand with a knee. Ziggler came back and got the upper hand, but missed a dive into the corner, followed by a series of heavy elbow drops by Rusev.

Power shots from Rusev followed, including choking Ziggler on the bottom rope. A heavy Bulgarian boot to the midsection floored Ziggler while Rusev appealed to the crowd. The Bulgarian locked Ziggler in a bear hug, and held it for a very long time, bringing the momentum to a dead halt. Ziggler finally started to fight back with punches, kicks, and a dropkick. But when he went for a cross-body, Rusev caught him and tilt-a-whirl slammed him to the mat. The crowd is already chanting “USA! USA!”, and it seems to be motivating Ziggler. Rusev went for a press slam but Ziggler reversed it into his patented DDT.

Both men down on the mat but it’s Rusev up first.  A slugfest ensues but Ziggler wins it this time and hits the big dive in the corner, followed by a leaping elbow drop. Rusev easily kicked out of a pin attempt, then nailed Ziggler with a spinning heel kick. Amazing agility by Rusev. Ziggler kicked out of a pin attempt, then Rusev went to the top rope only to be caught by Ziggler who hit him with a facebuster.  Superkick by Ziggler gets blocked by Rusev, who slammed him hard then hit a flipping senton out of nowhere! Ziggler kicked out at two. Rusev again signaled for a finish, but missed the kick and got rolled up for a two-count. Ziggler leaped upon hi for a sleeper hold and got to the ropes, but the ref didn’t break it for some reason. Ziggler held on until Rusev crushed him in the corner. But Ziggler rebounded and hit him with the Fameasser for a close two-count.

Both men slow to get up, but Ziggler tried to leap on Rusev and got caught and hit with a massive superkick. Rusev signaled for the “Accolade” and locked Ziggler in it. Outside the ring Lana just slapped the taste out of Summer Rae’s mouth, causing Rusev to break the hold.  The crowd is chanting for Lana, which has only incensed Rusev. Rusev is toying with Ziggler outside the ring until Summer Rae hit Lana with a spear. Ziggler woke up and hit Rusev with a superkick, but neither man noticed the ref was still counting until it was too late. Ziggler rushed into the ring but didn’t beat the count. Both men were counted out so nobody gets the win.

After the match, Ziggler and Rusev continued to battle. Summer Rae jumped on Ziggler and began punching him until Lana got involved and a catfight broke out, which the crowd was wholly in favor of. They booed when the women were pulled apart. Ziggler and Lana continued to celebrate in the ring while Rusev and Summer Rae went up the ramp in disgust.

Travis’ Thoughts: What a lame finish after a decent match. This was destined to be overbooked with all the romance angles going on, but at least give the pumped crowd a decent ending. That said, Ziggler was incredibly energized in his comeback match, and Rusev got to show off his combination of power and agility that made him so dominant for such a long time.  A mixed-tag match is inevitable, though. Hopefully it will be on TV and not at a PPV.
