3. John Cena
With rumors swirling that John Cena is going to be taking some time off soon, he will clearly be leaving everything in the ring on his way out. Everyone knows it: the John Cena U.S. Open Challenge is epic. Never before—and perhaps never again—has there been such a solid stretch of incredible, must-watch matches featuring the same Superstar. Simply put, there hasn’t been a bad Open Challenge to date. And WWE uses this to their advantage, knowing they have a guaranteed, main event-caliber showdown whenever they need one.
I find myself no longer caring about who answers the challenge each week, but more so excited to see someone who usually doesn’t get as much TV time lay it all out there in a featured match. Say what you will about Cena, but the amount of opportunity afforded to the rest of the roster, despite how they may or may not be booked after the fact, is tremendous. The John Cena U.S. Open Challenge isn’t about who wins or loses anymore; it’s about whether or not a Superstar can steal the show when given a fair shot. Sometimes the challenger is a little a more unpredictable than others, but I have a sneaking suspicion about who will answer the call next week…
