Alberrrrrrtooooooooo
The comeback that nobody saw coming. There had been so many internet swerves being thrown out before tonight about who would answer the John Cena United States Championship Open Challenge. Would it be an NXT guy like Samoa Joe or Tyler Breeze? A returning star like Daniel Bryan? A guy from the pre-show like Cesaro or Dolph Ziggler?
Instead, it was the former three-time world champion, Alberto Del Rio. Back from his stint in Lucha Underground and this time, he’s aligned with former adversary Zeb Colter. When Colter came out I was convinced it would be Jack Swagger getting a major push to get the title, but instead it was Alberto Del Rio.
Los Angelas was a good place to redebut for Del Rio. The crowd was hot, and he hadn’t missed a beat from last being in WWE early last year. To top off his comeback, Del Rio won clean. Yes, John Cena is selling an injury, but it’s still a win with no tomfoolery over “The Face That Runs The Place.” Del Rio has that legitimacy about him as a former world champ.
One downside is that now there is no way he’s back in Lucha Underground, but being back in WWE is great too. It gives WWE another guy who can be a legitimate main eventer at th drop of a hat, and helps fill the large void that Cena missing time will cause. Some new rivalries can come forward, like Neville, Sami Zayn, or New Day. Those are three of man new feuds for the man who just needed 18 months away from WWE to be loved again by the fans.
Oh, and putting him with Zeb Colter? Interesting and intriguing. Seeing their partnership develop will be fun to watch. Having Zeb Colter back is another big boost as well.
Brutality? Reigns-Wyatt three tables, all the kendo sticks, nasty spear table bump on the outside.
