The Mystery Opponent Must Not Disappoint at Hell in a Cell

The WWE is starting to get into a groove where they regularly rely on a mystery participant to bolster a match.

We saw it last month at Night of Champions, as Dean Amborse and Roman Reigns hyped a mystery partner in their six-man tag match, who turned out to be no other than WWE’s perennial big return guy, Chris Jericho.

Jericho’s unveiling as the mystery partner was met with the initial pop which it deserved, but regardless of how nice it is to see the Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla, the reveal couldn’t live up to the hype that radiates off the innate allure of the mystery partner. Jericho has been the focus of so many shrouded returns that it felt a little too familiar.

And now here we are a month later, and instead of trying to figure out the mystery partner, we’re trying to figure out who the mystery opponent is going to be in John Cena’s U.S. Open Challenge.

I’ve broken it down to three potential prospects: the realistic, the possible, and the highly improbable.

The realistic is Kofi Kingston. John Cena has already squared off against the other two members of the New Day, so rounding out the trifecta is only fitting. Plus Kofi is one of the most reliable performers in the WWE. If anyone is guaranteed to put on a great match with John Cena, it’s Kofi.

The possible is Finn Bálor. With all the NXT call-ups of late, you’d think Finn has to be one of the frontrunners to make the jump to the main roster. And there isn’t a entrance better suiting the mystique surrounding the mystery opponent than Bálor’s.

The improbable is Daniel Bryan… Man would that be awesome. There have been rumors of him receiving medical clearance to wrestle again. Hearing the Flight of the Valkyries hit would send the crowd into a frenzy; the Yes chants would last throughout the entire match. If the WWE is going for the absolute biggest surprise return possible, it would have to involve Daniel Bryan.

As long as it’s one of the three—the realistic, the possible or the improbable—they’d all be a great choice to step up as the mystery partner in the U.S. Open Challenge because…
