At least this is a superstar has been on television in recent months, granted Zach Ryder has played the role of a jobber. Long gone are the days where he was the United State Champion and had a great feud with Dolph Ziggler as the two had a lot of chemistry in working together.
Sure, he had the type of gimmick where he seemed like someone trying to be the cool kid in school while everyone mocked him behind his back. It was like the one guy in the WWE roster who wanted to bring back the 1980s pop culture with the spiked hair, wearing sunglasses at night and the headband that reminds me of Jim McMahon of the 1985 Chicago Bears.
The goofy gimmick started to grow on many fans, especially when he started doing his own YouTube series – Z! True Long Island Story – that started in 2011 where he made fun of the fact that he wasn’t really happy with his position on the main roster. It was fresh and it showed personality that led to fans wanting to see more of him.
This Ryder Revolution led to him having a title run. However, he became a punching bag in the John Cena and Kane feud in 2012. Since then, he’s been sent back to jobber status and hasn’t been able to get back to what he once was.
Ryder is likely one of the names to be considered when WWE does it’s roster dumping and there is a lot of pressure on these lower-tier stars to up their game with the talent in NXT. Maybe his current tag team with Mojo Rawley will save his career since the tag team division needs depth. Yet I can’t help but wonder how many lives this “cool” cat has.
