Remember when there was a lot of excitement over the new talent WWE’s Divas Division? The hope has since faded with a combination of bad booking and missed opportunities.
There was hope, so much hope, that we were about to see the future of women’s wrestling in WWE make a huge rebounds from what we’ve seen. When Stephanie McMahon announced a revolution in the Divas Division which brought the debuts of Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Charlotte.
For years, fans were complaining about the quality of women’s wrestling matches. Divas were wanting more of a spotlight. So the new blood of competition was peaking some interest in that we might see a resurgence last sensed when Mickie James was involved in classic rivalries with Trish Stratus and Lita.

Sure, we saw the Divas Championship leave the grasp of Nikki Bella – who was likely only holding it so she could break a streak held by A.J. Lee – and go into the hands of Charlotte, Rick Flair’s daughter who has shown a lot of potential in the ring and can likely continue to evolve. There has also been a lot displayed from Banks, who came off a memorable set of matches with Bayley down in NXT.
But despite all the positives that have come from newer talent and a few good matches, it seems that the flames of the raging fire that was the Divas Revolution have started to die down. The bucket of water that may be the culprit is the fact that the how some of the characters have advanced since then is sub par.
One of my biggest points is that the heel turn by Paige probably came a little too soon after the forming of the trio with Charlotte and Lynch to compete with Team B.A.D. and the Bella Twins – and a somewhat misplaced Alicia Fox who seems like the odd third wheel that causes the bicycle to wobble awkwardly.
Paige drops a promo where she verbally tears into her PCB teammates and then she wants to join the team. Now she’s feuding with them again as the heel looking to claim the Divas Championship. Then there was the noticeable absence of Team B.A.D. when Charlotte and Nikki Bella were battling for the title and you have a creative team that has once again dropped the ball with something that started to catch fire.
But should we really be surprised by the recent fumble of storyline gold? We’ve seen the big pushes when some of the recent NXT call-ups have debuted over the past few years and then falter with poor booking decisions, which includes Bray Wyatt since losing to John Cena at WrestleMania.
If there’s one positive out of this is that you can at least consider WWE equal opportunity in how they butcher storylines and popular characters – regardless of age, size and gender. This might be a trend that will continue until the creative team starts to include brighter minds. Until then, it will be hard to get excited for women’s wrestling.

Maybe we can just eliminate the backstage promos and just let them wrestle. Introductions, entrance music, and then the match. The creative staff can’t mess up how good they are in the ring, right?
