Last Week: 2

There are certain inevitabilities that every WWE fan must come to accept throughout various storylines and feuds, and as we near the close of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament, that inevitability this time around is that Roman Reigns is going to win it all. That’s probably going to be the inevitability for many years to come, really.

Whether you love him or hate him, everyone has seen the rise of the Roman Empire (gag) coming for over a year now—the last ounce of hope for the haters being the fact that Reigns has never won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship… or any singles title, for that matter.

The WWE has always relied “the guy”—the one who is the number one, the one that is a cut above the rest—and everyone has their opinion on whether or not that’s a good thing. Regardless of whatever camp you may reside in, everyone can agree that whoever is “the guy,” he at least needs to able to keep people interested despite that he is always winning.

Take Stone Cold Steve Austin, for instance. The Attitude Era and Austin’s presence within it will always be looked at with some degree of rose-tinted glasses, but at the same time, it is undeniable that people were tuning in week after week to see what Austin would do next, even though he was “the guy.” No one cared that he was the perennial favorite because he was entertaining to watch regardless.

Reigns, however, not so much. On Raw Roman came out and proclaimed that he turned down Triple H’s deal because he doesn’t sell out, but that’s kind of hard to swallow when it’s coming from someone who, behind the scenes, has been so obviously handpicked as the golden boy without any on-screen credentials to warrant such an aggressive push.

Sure, Roman has had his moments: the Shield was great to watch; triple powerbombs through announce tables are cool. Yet, what has been memorable about Roman since then besides winning a slew of matches? Austin had beer baths and Zambonis; Reigns has the ability to kick out of anything.

Some people are still holding out for a massive swerve come Sunday, but this could easily be one of those instances where the swerve is the fact that there is no tangible swerve whatsoever.
