WWE Survivor Series 2015: Why Roman Reigns Must Face Kevin Owens in Tournament Final
By Carl Gac
We are now only days away from Survivor Series where a brand new WWE World Heavyweight Champion will be crowned. Here’s who should headline in the Survivor Series tournament final.
When Seth Rollins sustained his injury during the WWE UK tour it was a massive blow to the plans for the bosses at WWE. When it was announced that the WWE Championship would be decided in a tournament final at Survivor Series, the majority of fans expected Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose to make it to the end. Reigns, after all, was the man who should have faced Rollins for the belt after winning the No. 1 Contenders spot. The easy match would be to have the two former Shield men face each other in the final with Reigns winning his first WWE Championship. Option two is having Ambrose turn heel and join the Authority on the way to getting his hands on the belt. But that’s not how it needs to go down. What’s best for business is for Ambrose to lose to Kevin Owens in his semifinal match and go on to face Reigns.
We saw Triple H basically offer Reigns a bye to the final of the tournament, if he took the offer to join the Authority a couple of weeks ago. He refused that offer and since then we’ve seen Triple H trying to sweet talk all the other contenders for the belt into joining him. On Raw this week we saw him speak to some of the other men, including a secret chat with Owens. We’ve also heard KO talk about the fact he wants to make as much money as possible to provide for his family. Well, what if that secret chat involved Triple H offering Kevin as much money as he wanted to make sure that Reigns does not leave Survivor Series with that belt?

Reigns will be pushed as the next big babyface whether the fans like it or not. Owens, on the other hand, is one of the hottest properties the company has. Every week, since he debuted in NXT, he has been among the best things on the show every week. From his main roster debut against John Cena, to his matches with the likes of Cesaro and Neville and his outstanding work on the microphone. Owens is the real deal and has everything. All he is missing is the company’s biggest title.
A gloating Owens opens up a world of creative possibilities, more than you get with a babyface Reigns. Roman’s character works better as the man of the people chasing the dastardly bad guy. The is the best way to get the fans behind him is to have him properly chase a heel champion for the belt. Let him get the feeling he’s being held down, that he can’t win the belt and the fans will begin to get behind him. If he walks away with the belt and the crowd reacts badly, which they more than likely would, then that gets him off to a potentially disastrous start, one he may never be able to recover from. Owens doing everything he has to do to keep hold of the title is the perfect foil for both Reigns and Triple H as the evil boss.
If Owens can walk away with the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series, the possibilities are endless. We saw how well he performed against perennial champion Cena in his early days on the main roster, playing the heel to perfection. If you want to build Reigns as the next big thing he needs to work opposite a man of the caliber of Owens. If this happens, it also leaves us with the specter of Ambrose, the friend of Reigns who slowly becomes more jealous as the weeks go by, before going crazy and snapping through jealousy. That could easily lead to a triple threat for the title between all three members of The Shield when Rollins is ready to return.
