WWE: The Confusing Character of Roman Reigns

Does Roman Reigns feel like someone who is being forced into a role that doesn’t suit him? Same here, and it’s why he comes across confusing.

Let me start by admitting that I’m not at all opposed to someone like Roman Reigns being the face of the WWE. At first, I just accepted it as an eventual fact that will happen similar to the rise of John Cena that started in 2004.

The thing about Reigns is that he comes with a bit of family history in the business through the Anoa’I Family that has big names like Peter Maivia, Yokozuna, the Wild Samoans and the Rock. He also looks the part of a world heavyweight champion that should be a dominating figure that would make his family proud – he’s a six-foot-three, 265-pound athlete.

So why are many fans, myself included, very critical? He does seem to be forced to be booked as a babyface superhero that would be okay if he had the personality that fits the role. That is where we find something that confuses me about Reigns as a WWE superstar – he doesn’t seem to fit the mold of a good guy and it’s really only because they are booking him against heels.

Reigns was at his best when he was the silent man with only a few words that was the powerhouse of the Shield; so when the team split, it would have been best to keep him at that punch first, speak last character who could be more of an anti-hero that actually doesn’t care about past alliances and feuds – he wants that WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

  • Another reason for that is that none of his promo work that has really been memorable for the right seasons. The fact that they keep giving him a microphone and have him talk for lines that don’t really make sense. Just have him punch someone and yell “believe that” repeatedly throughout the match; it would be a lot more entertaining and would make more sense.

Sure, it made sense to have him go after folks like Triple H and eventually Seth Rollins for the gold. But the storylines they have booked him haven’t really helped me understand his character. I understand that the real person behind Roman Reigns is someone who is a family man who wants to do the best for his family.

But when it comes to the fact that he acts as this dominant athlete that really shouldn’t talk, the questions becomes why he didn’t turn heel. It feels like he was much better as the member of the Shield when they were heels and it would fit him better if the fans aren’t necessarily happy with him anyway.

And yet we’ve seen him have dominant performances on television and pretty much no-sell a lot of offense as the guy who was only a few to take Brock Lesnar to the limit at WrestleMania 31; so why not keep that going as the dominant world champion that doesn’t care that he has to destroy everyone from his former brother in Dean Ambrose to Sheamus.

WWE should really focus more on make Roman Reigns what he really is, a big man who doesn’t need to say a lot and has the mission of destroying everyone who stands in his way.
