How to Book The Undertaker’s Final Match
By Dean Siemon
It’s that time of year for fans to speculate about who the Undertaker will face at WrestleMania, but this is likely to be his last year at the age of 50. Who is likely to be his final opponent?
It’s only a matter of time before we hear the final tolls of that iconic bell that WWE fans have been familiar with for 25 years. For a majority of those years, we’ve seen the Undertaker as a supernatural force that went on an unprecedented 21-match undefeated streak at WrestleMania that will likely never be repeated or beat.
However, we have seen a much more mortal superstar ever since he lost to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30. While he bounced back after at WrestleMania 31 against Bray Wyatt last April, he was involved with a feud seeking revenge on Lesnar that showed him earning a questionable win at SummerSlam and a loss at Hell in a Cell. There was also a small feud between the Wyatt Family and the reunited Brothers of Destruction.

With the Royal Rumble coming up, this is usually the time of year where fans start to speculate who will face the Deadman. There would be some that believe it’s best for him to finally have that dream match with the “Icon” Sting, but that match wouldn’t be able to provide an ending that would leave fans happy; not to mention we’re not sure if Sting will be ready after the neck injury at Night of Champions back in September.

If the Undertaker defeats Sting, then the former WCW champion would be 0-3 in WWE. If Sting wins, longtime fans of the Undertaker may not be happy with that result either. So who would be the best fit?
The idea of having John Cena face the Undertaker actually makes a lot of sense. They have only faced each other one time back in 2003 at the Vengeance pay-per-view in a regular singles match. It was early in Cena’s career that was one of the main events at the time.
The history between these two superstars actually dates back to the June 27, 2002, episode of SmackDown in the moments after Cena made his debut by accepting Kurt Angle’s open challenge where the young star showed his “ruthless aggression” in an existing match he barely lost. In a backstage segment that followed, Cena was congratulated by other superstars; including then-WWE Champion Undertaker.
The Undertaker is a lot weaker than back then and that could be part of his promos that follow an attack on Cena. Something like “I knew when I first shook your hand years ago that you were the one who was going to end my career.”

It isn’t going to be the most popular choice, and Cena might admit it’s a tall order to be the person to be that guy. But he’s had to carry a lot of weight over his years in the WWE; so why not add another near 300 pounds.
It will seem like a good idea creative wise and while no one wants the Undertaker’s career to be over, he’s 50 years old and his best matches are well behind him – it’s been quite noticeable for us fans since 2014.
