12. Payback

Date: May 17, 2015

Venue: Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland

Since it doesn’t have name recognition the likes of Survivor Series, it’s possible that a few years from now people will forget that WWE Payback 2015 ever happened. It’d be a shame, too, because the Fatal 4-Way main event for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was one of the better matches of the year.

The back story wasn’t anything special: Thanks to a WWE App vote, Rollins was originally set to defend the belt against Roman Reigns and Randy Orton in a Triple Threat match. Dean Ambrose got added to the match later after defeating Seth Rollins in one-on-one competition on Raw.

The match itself had some incredible spots, one of which being a brief Shield reunion where all three men—Rollins, Ambrose and Reigns—triple powerbombed Randy Orton onto the announce table. There were plenty of near-falls, but eventually J&J Security and Kane got involved, ensuring that Rollins retained.

Besides that, the rest of Payback was a stinker. The second-biggest match on the card was an I-Quit match where John Cena defended his U.S. Championship against Rusev. The match ended when John Cena caught Rusev in the STF, using an unhooked ring rope for added leverage. Lana called “I Quit” on Rusev’s behalf, leading to the couple’s temporary separation shortly after Payback.
