Tension between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn date back several years, well before either man signed with WWE. Now their rivalry is renewed, and they’re set to write the next chapter at WWE Payback 2016.
Sami Zayn won the NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution—the same night Kevin Owens debuted with the brand. Owens came out to celebrate with his longtime peer, but quickly turned his back on Zayn, powerbombing him into the ring apron.

Owens would go on to take the NXT Championship from Zayn; however, before Zayn could get a chance at vengeance, a shoulder injury forced him out of action for several months.
Zayn made his triumphant return at the 2016 WWE Royal Rumble, eliminating Owens from the Rumble match, and at WWE WrestleMania 32 Zayn played an integral part in Owens losing the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a seven-man ladder match.
Needless to say, both men were ready to tear one another apart when the bell rang at WWE Payback 2016.
The crowd was firmly behind Zayn at the start of the match, and “Ole” chants bellowed through the Allstate Arena.

And all the pent-up animosity between the two men quickly exploded.

After a barrage by Zayn, Kevin Owens took control of the match and stayed on top of Zayn for several minutes. Zayn, however, found some life and mounted a comeback. Zayn connected with the Blue Thunder Bomb, but Kevin Owens kicked out of the pin attempt.

What was more shocking was when Zayn hit a second Blue Thunder Bomb and Owens managed to kick out again. The two went back and forth thereafter, with both men unleashing everything they had.

In the end Owens hit the Popup Powerbomb and got the victory.

Afterward, Kevin Owens continued the onslaught against Zayn, and he got on the mic and boasted about beating Zayn.

He also said he was setting his sights on the Intercontinental Championship, and Owens decided to head to the announcers’ table to call the ensuing match between Cesaro and the Miz.
