Was The Miz able to defend his Intercontinental Championship in a Fatal Four-Way match vs. Kevin Owens, Cesaro, and Sami Zayn at WWE Extreme Rules?

The seeds for this match were planted back at WWE Payback when Kevin Owens defeated longtime rival Sami Zayn. After the match, Owens grabbed a mic and declared his intent to regain what he’s calling “his” Intercontinental Championship. With Owens on commentary, IC champ The Miz battled it out with challenger Cesaro, up until Sami Zayn returned and absolute chaos erupted at ringside.

The brawl between Zayn and Owens spilled into the ring, causing the referee to miss The Miz tapping out to a crossface from Cesaro. By the time the official regained his focus on the match at hand, Miz was able to roll-up Cesaro for the win.

In the following weeks on Raw, the stage was set for a Fatal Four-Way match for the IC Title at WWE Extreme Rules. What may be most interesting about this match is just how unpredictable the outcome is. One could make a case that all four competitors in this match are deserving of holding the belt. Just who will it be? Let’s get to the action…

Owens enters first looking as focused and intense as ever. Cesaro and Zayn follow to some great pops. Miz and Maryse are last to enter. Miz has seemingly ditched his all gold look for his usual black outfit.

The match starts incredibly quick as Zayn hits a brutal Helluva Kick on Owens right out the gate. Cesaro answers with a European uppercut to Miz and focuses his attention on Zayn.

Cesaro and Zayn go back and forth a bit until Miz reenters the fray. Zayn quickly dumps them both out of the ring and hits a superman plancha to both of them.

Zayn goes to work on Miz and sets him up for a super plex. Cesaro jumps back in and teases double suplex but Owens finally returns to break it up. Owens then viciously sets his sights on Zayn.

Miz returns and he and Zayn take turns trying to superplex Owens off the top turnbuckle. They team up and look to hit it but Cesaro sneaks in and powerbombs all three men for a near fall.

Cesaro, Miz, and Zayn now take turn battling in the ring when Cesaro hits them with this:

Cesaro’s feeling it now as he starts an uppercut train to all 3 men in the corners. Cesaro looks for a giant swing but Owens interrupts and goes on a cannonball rampage of his own. Owens then nearly hits a pop-up powerbomb on Zayn, who counters with an exploder. Cesaro comes back with an uppercut to Zayn but immediately gets hit with the Skull-Crushing Finale by Miz. Cesaro kicks out at 2 and a half and fights back against Miz, setting him up for a swing!

Cesaro then makes Miz tap out to a sharpshooter but the official was distracted with Maryse. Owens attempts a roll-up to no avail, then Cesaro hits the Neutralizer to Owens. Zayn breaks it up and goes for a sunset flip.

Owens hits Cesaro with a pop-up powerbomb but is pulled away by Miz, who capitalizes off a Maryse distraction to hit Owens with a Skull-Crushing Finale.

Miz attempts to steal one with a pin on Cesaro to no avail. Zayn sneaks back in to hit a Helluva Kick on Cesaro. Owens pulls Zayn out of the ring allowing The Miz to steal the pin for the victory.

Evan’s thoughts: Wow! What a match! The fans busted out the “FIGHT FOREVER” chants and I couldn’t help but agree. Almost impossible to keep up with all the highlights for this one. Not the biggest fan of The Miz getting the win but at least the Owens-Zayn feud is going to continue. Hands down, match of the night so far.
