WWE Needs Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match

It’s long overdue for the WWE women’s division to have a Money in the Bank ladder match.

WWE finally got it. It was less important to talk about a “Divas Revolution” than to actually show it. And so they have, by introducing the new Women’s Championship, and even having Charlotte and Natalya have the main event segment on Raw last week. Now they need to take it a step further and give the ladies the equivalent to the most exciting match of the year, the Money in the Bank ladder match.

Rumors have surfaced from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer suggesting WWE has considered the idea of a MITB match for the women’s division, and but that’s all they are, just a bunch of rumors. It needs to happen, and it needs to happen with next month’s PPV.  The roster of female superstars has never been more robust than it is right now with champion Charlotte dealing with competitors such as Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, Paige, Natalya, and Dana Brooke.

That doesn’t even include currently-injured stars such as Naomi, Tamina, and Emma, but it could also serve as the perfect platform for a popular superstar like former NXT champ Bayley to make her presence felt instantly. Imagine if she competed for the coveted briefcase in her first high-profile match on the main roster? She already has a Daniel Bryan-esque underdog aura around her that would be amplified by such a competitive matchup. The fans would eat it up.

Over the last couple of years, the guys haven’t exactly amplified the prestige of the MITB match. Sheamus winning it last year was arguably its lowest point ever, with nobody really caring when or if he cashed-in. Having a Ms. Money in the Bank threatening to cash-in on Charlotte would bring back some of that excitement in a big way.

Meltzer suggests the fans wouldn’t want to see the women in a ladder match, though, a theory which sounds more like a personal issue than thought-out reasoning.  He would no doubt be the first to say the women deserve to be treated as equals to the male superstars, but then he undermines them by suggesting they can’t stand the rigors of a ladder match. No, if the women are to be considered on the same level they need to be treated as such, and undoubtedly the ladies would agree. If anything, they have proven over the last few months, especially on NXT, that they can withstand the same level of punishment as the men. They deserve the opportunity to prove that without being coddled. And besides, the fans aren’t stupid. They understand the physical toll of a ladder match perfectly well. WWE doesn’t do ladder matches with its female athletes as a general rule, but they should take a hint from other companies that do and start thinking a bit differently. These women can handle it, and probably excel at it.

At this point in time, Charlotte has no clear opponent to defend her Women’s Championship against. She’s wrapped up her run against Natalya (hopefully), done away with her legendary father Ric Flair, and aligned herself with Dana Brooke. Unless Ric returns with a new protégé to guide against his own daughter, then Charlotte’s dance card is wide open. Banks would seem like the fan’s choice for an opponent, but she’s been hurt and off of TV for a while.

A new opponent needs to emerge, and what better way to do that than with a Money in the Bank match? WWE has been using it to create brand new male superstars since 2005. It’s long since time the women are offered that same opportunity for greatness.
