3. Zack Ryder

Zack Ryder wasn’t really one of John Cena’s greatest foes. He wasn’t really a foe of Cena at all, and it speaks to Cena’s burying ability that he managed to destroy Ryder’s career anyway.

In 2011 Ryder was at the height of his popularity. Ryder can rightfully be credited with pushing WWE into the world of social media, using his Youtube show “Z! True Hollywood Story” to become an Internet sensation. There’s a reason why fans dubbed him the WWE Internet Champion, and he cultivated that popularity into his first title run as United States Champion.

Suddenly he and Cena became best buddies. Say wha? Yeah, it just kinda came out of nowhere. Sure, Cena had helped him earn his title shot but they were hardly pals. Cena began hovering around and getting in-between Ryder and his would-be girlfriend, Eve. Ryder caught them kissing, which broke up that friendship nobody ever wanted in the first place.  Kane got involved, practically broke Ryder’s neck, and by March of 2012, Ryder was practically a ghost. In fact, Cena remarked that Ryder had “fallen off the face of the earth”.

It’s true. Ryder had been spun off of Planet McMahon faster than Cena’s ridiculous spinner championship belt.  Ryder’s 2012 was one of the worst years a superstar has ever had, made worse by the tremendous homegrown success he was in 2011. It helped start a trend of Ryder being the perpetual underachiever, a trend that continues to this day. Not sure who we can blame for that, but I hope it’s not the guy who preaches about hustle, LOYALTY, and respect.
