If you’re a Reigns hater (and statistically speaking you probably are), it’s still hard to deny that his match against AJ Styles at WWE Payback wasn’t impressive. The odds were more than stacked against Reigns as Chicago is a notoriously vocal crowd and Styles was seen as the closest they will get to CM Punk. As such, the initial cheers for Styles and boos for Reigns were deafening but even this hostile crowd began to recognize the impressive spots as both men kept the pace relatively high.

The decision to pit Reigns against Styles in his first championship feud was a smart one because WWE had nothing to lose. It was highly unlikely that Reigns would drop the belt so soon after winning and those fans who dislike Reigns were going to boo him no matter who he faced. The company showed faith in AJ Styles in an attempt to help put Reigns over but were no doubt pleasantly surprised when they discovered just how well the two men worked together.

More than anything, this match proved that Reigns is a capable wrestler who can at the very least match or exceed the talent of his opponent. The people who chant “YOU CAN’T WRESTLE” at Reigns seem to suffer from the same misguided frustration as those who boo him on a regular basis without truly understanding why. Why not direct these chants at someone who deserves it, like Eva Marie? Oh right, she’s not on television enough to even hear such chants.

Roman Reigns is a better athlete than you, so just get over it. Even if you’re an amateur wrestler, he’s still better than you, and booing him isn’t going to change that.
