What happened when Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens squared off at WWE Battleground?

It would be an understatement to say Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens have one of the most heated rivalries in recent wrestling history. From their days on the independent scene to literally the first moment Owens set foot in an NXT ring to their time on the main roster, the former friends turned bitter enemies have been locked in a blood feud fueled by mutual disdain for one another.

Though Zayn has gotten the upper hand on Owens on several occasions – namely eliminating him from the Royal Rumble this year, and costing him the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania – nothing has given any indication that tensions between the Canadian superstars are cooling.

At Battleground, Owens and Zayn were signed to compete in what has been billed as “the final encounter” between the longtime rivals. However, with both men being drafted to Raw in the brand extension, the chances that their paths will cease to cross are slim to none.

Coming in to Battleground, the action was anticipated to be intense, given the animosity between The Prizefighter and The Ultimate Underdog. Any encounter prior to Battleground was fierce, with each man looking to take out his nemesis once and for all.

Things got started outside the ring, with Sami hitting a vicious clothesline on the floor.

Owens took things over, following up on a cannonball with a “Fit Finlay-esque punt,” in the words of JBL.

Next on the agenda: A quick stop in Chinlock City for Sami.

Sami avoided an apron powerbomb, but badly missed on a moonsault, looking to tweak his shoulder.

Zayn managed to hit a Blue Thunder Bomb regardless, but only managed a two count.

As Sami fought with one arm, he countered a possible Death Valley Driver on the apron from Owens. He transitioned it into a brainbuster on the apron.

Neither man would give an inch, and just started laying blows into his opponent.

After another cannonball, Owens hit the frog splash, but Sami kicked out again.

Owens went for a pop-up powerbomb, but Sami countered with a pair of half-nelson suplexes. But Owens kicked out.

Owens finally hit the pop-up powerbomb, but Sami got his foot in the ropes to break up the count.

Owens screamed at Sami to stay down, but no such luck.

Sami came back to hit a Helluva Kick, and decided to catch Owens and set him up for a second.

The second Helluva Kick was enough to put this one away, as Sami came away with a very hard-fought victory.
