What Does the WWE Tag Team Division’s Future Look Like?

With the main roster divided between Raw and SmackDown after the WWE Draft, the future of the tag team division is a mystery.

Prior to the WWE Draft on SmackDown, the WWE announced that tag teams would only count as one pick unless the show drafting them wanted a specific member of that team. All signs seemed to point to a break up of current WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day. Instead of breaking up the trio, The New Day were drafted to Raw by Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon with the 10th pick.

With the tag team champions on Raw, what will happen to all the other tag teams on SmackDown? The answer to this question is still unknown, but it is possible that the WWE will introduce a second pair of tag team titles exclusively for SmackDown.

At the moment, the SmackDown roster lacks the big name teams that Raw has, but they do have a lot of young duos that could benefit from being on a separate show. Teams like The Usos, The Ascension, The Vaudevillains and Breezango would likely get lost in the shuffle on Raw, but on SmackDown these teams will have a much better opportunity to perform live weekly.

Aside from these teams, SmackDown will also have American Alpha on its roster. Chad Gable and Jason Jordan have been one of the most exciting tag teams in NXT and are poised to have a strong run on the main roster. Should the WWE choose to bring back a second pair of tag team titles exclusive to SmackDown, they will likely be awarded to American Alpha.

Unlike all the other tag teams on the SmackDown roster, American Alpha are fresh and exciting. The duo brings a unique style of amateur wrestling to the WWE that has been missing since “The World’s Greatest Tag Team,” consisting of Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, broke up in 2008.

While the future of SmackDown’s tag team division is still unclear, Raw’s tag division seems to be much more planned out. With The New Day’s feud with The Wyatt Family over after Battleground, the tag team champs will now be clashing with The Club on Monday nights.

On the July 25th edition of Raw, The New Day came out to the ring to commemorate becoming the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions of all time. After the tag champs invited a fan from the crowd to celebrate with them, The Club stormed into the ring to crash the party.

With The New Day headed toward a match with The Club at SummerSlam, the rest of the tag division has nothing to do at the moment. Enzo Amore and Big Cass are one of the hottest tag teams on the main roster and are fresh off of a win over The Club at Battleground. The duo defeated the Shining Stars on Monday night, but it probably won’t lead to a long term feud.

The WWE now has to figure out what to do with all the other tag teams on Raw’s roster. Outside of The New Day and The Club, there are four other tag teams currently on the roster. Only one of those four tag teams is legitimate contenders for the tag titles. With that in mind, it would be in the best interest of the WWE to keep Enzo and Big Cass hot.

While The New Day are occupied with their feud with The Club, the WWE needs to keep Enzo and Cass’ momentum going by giving the duo more wins. The other tag teams on the Raw roster are The Dudley Boyz, the Golden Truth, and the Shining Stars. These duos are not tag team championship material at the moment and are best used as enhancement talent.

Giving Enzo and Cass convincing wins over the remaining tag teams on the roster gives them a lot of momentum heading into the future, where they could feud with either The New Day or The Club for the tag team titles. With that said, the future of Raw’s tag team division looks bright.

With the tag team division divided between Raw and SmackDown, it will be interesting to see if a second pair of tag team titles will be introduced for SmackDown, or if Raw will continue to be the only brand with tag team gold.
