WWE: Women’s Revolution Back on Track

Monday Night Raw’s saw Sasha Banks dethrone WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte in the match of the night, getting the Women’s Revolution back on track.

One night removed from the uproarious ovation Bayley received for her surprise entrance at Battleground, Raw looked to set the table in this New Era by pitting the number one contender Sasha Banks against the reigning WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte in a surprising Monday night title fight with the lights on bright.

The match, which could have very easily been saved for SummerSlam, stole the show and was perhaps the finest women’s division match since the epic triple threat at Wrestlemania 32. Both competitors showcased exactly why they are the cream of the crop in WWE’s women’s division, and the standard bearer for all future female wrestlers, especially to the girls down in NXT.

Raw gave both Charlotte and Sasha time to tell a proper story with a beginning, middle, and end

Even more impressive was that Raw gave both Charlotte and Sasha time to tell a proper story with a beginning, middle, and end. Many of Charlotte’s recent televised matches had been short, so it was great to see the champion be able to go the distance like we all knew she was capable of, having perhaps the best singles performance of her career thus far. Sasha hadn’t missed a beat; coming back and putting together a series of matches leading up to this championship match after being off of TV for an extended period of time, and looking like the Sasha from 2015, albeit this time as the babyface.

Sasha would cut a promo, but not before being drowned out by chants of “you deserve it”

The match featured memorable spots, including an amazing Kurt Angle-esque top-rope moonsault to the outside from Charlotte, and Sasha paying tribute to her lifelong hero Eddie Guerrero with a classic “Latino Heat” cheat to get Dana Brooke thrown out from ringside. At the end of it all, Sasha forced Charlotte to submit to the Bank Statement, capturing her first WWE Women’s Championship and in the process receiving a huge pop, much like her best friend Bayley had gotten the night before. An impassioned, emotional Sasha would cut a promo, but not before being drowned out by chants of “you deserve it” from the Pittsburgh audience.

More from WWE

The scene following Sasha’s win on Monday Night is a reassuring sign that WWE is seeking to get their Women’s Revolution back on track, following the disappointing lull the division suffered (to no fault of the women on the roster) post-Wrestlemania 32. Raw fired the first salvo by featuring an epic championship match and a momentous title change, bringing an immediate impact to their women’s roster. Smackdown will look to do the same Tuesday night, as will NXT, who looks to have its work cut out for them with the recent call-ups of Alexa Bliss, Carmella, and Nia Jax.

Raw answered the call by putting Charlotte and Sasha in a near 20-minute title match

Lucha Underground recently had Sexy Star win the Gift of the Gods Championship, raising the bar even further for what women are able to achieve in this business, and after Monday Night, Raw answered the call by putting Charlotte and Sasha in a near 20-minute title match, outworking an impressive opening Fatal 4-Way, and challenging the main event contest between Finn Balor and Roman Reigns to top what they had done. More importantly, Raw put the Charlotte vs. Sasha match in the second hour of the show, showing that Mick Foley has learned from the mistakes of the ratings dip for previous episodes in the third hour.

Sasha’s big title win Monday night not only was much-needed for her own personal career, but for revitalizing the WWE Women’s Division that had so much promise in late 2015 to early 2016 before it nearly lost all of its momentum due to bad booking, writing, and general lack of TV time for 90% of its roster. A new champion means new challengers, which means new storylines. This is exactly what WWE needed to do, and hopefully, Smackdown and NXT will look to match what Raw provided. The Women’s Revolution is back on track heading into the second most important show of the year, SummerSlam.
