Finn Balor Defeating Seth Rollins at WWE SummerSlam Would Be an Upset

Finn Balor is set to battle Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, we look at why the former winning would be classed as an upset.

On August 21, former NXT Champion Finn Balor will go head to head with former WWE Champion Seth Rollins, with the newly created WWE Universal Championship as the prize for the victor. You’d be hard pushed to find a man have a better debut night on the main roster.

Balor made a big splash on his first night on Raw, first winning a fatal four-way match, then beating former WWE Champion Roman Reigns, to become the man who would face Rollins at SummerSlam. The fact that he goes forward to face Rollins, a man who is also a multi-time champion in WWE, should tell you all you need to know about where Balor stands in the eyes of Vince McMahon.

But having said all that, if we were to see Finn Balor get the win in his first main roster title match, it could only be classed as a massive upset, in the eyes of some fans at the very least. Despite all of his accolades in NXT, and around the world prior to that, WWE always likes to make the point that anything that happened prior to coming to WWE means nothing.

Balor was the NXT Champion for the majority of his run with the so called developmental company, but now he’s being pitted against a man who had the entire WWE upon his shoulders only twelve months ago.

On this Monday’s Raw, we saw we saw both Rollins and Balor speak, with Balor revealing he’s set to unleash his inner Demon at SummerSlam. WWE is doing everything they can to make us think that Balor is the underdog, with the commentary team even telling us that Balor winning would be an upset (way to sell your main event for you second biggest pay-per-view of the year).

The way that Rollins has made his mark on the entire WWE in the last few years, from being WWE Champion to being the chosen one of The Authority to carrying the main event scene for over a year. Since making his comeback from injury earlier in the year he won the WWE Championship from Roman Reigns, albeit for only a matter of minutes.

If we are to use WWE logic, where Balor heads into SummerSlam only being a former NXT Champion, then any win by Balor would be an upset. If Balor was to walk out of Brooklyn with that new Universal Championship around his waist, not only would Rollins be far from happy, but the majority of the WWE Universe would feel like their man had been beaten by someone not worthy.

To fans who have followed Balor’s career back to his days as Prince Devitt, to see him holding aloft one of the most important titles in arguably the world’s biggest professional wrestling companies, is a dream scenario. It’s a scenario that WWE wants us to think would be an upset, and looking at both men’s last few months it probably would be.
