4. Heel Champions Are Better Than Face Champions

The crowd response for Dean Ambrose isn’t what it was before he was WWE Champion. That’s because when a guy is chasing a major championship the way Ambrose was for two years, there’s excitement in the chase. Fans want to see a guy win that championship because we have been conditioned to “mark out” for those kinds of moments.

After that face wins the title (like Ambrose at Money in the Bank), then what? He just has matches against a number of different opponents, but it’s not like anything that he can do defending the title is going to excite the crowd as much as the chase.

By putting the WWE Title on Styles, they would have a heel champion that the fans will want to see lose. Since Styles is a cocky jerk that likes to tell people how great he is at everything, fans will celebrate whenever he loses the gold. It’s not something new in wrestling. It’s an old trick that still works.
