WWE Rumors: Shelton Benjamin to Return as Part of New Stable?
By Tom Thomas
Shelton Benjamin is rumored to be part of a ‘Varsity Club’ stable once he makes his eventual debut on SmackDown lives. What are the implications of this news?
Shelton Benjamin’s return to WWE SmackDown Live was announced on July 26. However, an ill-timed shoulder injury has delayed the proceedings. Benjamin is still recovering from the same. The former member of Team Angle had confirmed he will appear for WWE once he is medically cleared. Rumours have hit the internet this week regarding WWE’s plans for the former United States champion.
Wrestling Observer was the first to report rumors of a new Stable planned for SmackDown Live once Benjamin makes his return. Apparently, the plan is to have a ‘Varsity club’ like stable to feature on SmackDown Live. Shelton Benjamin, Dolph Ziggler, and Jack Swagger are the proposed members for this new stable. It will certainly be interesting to see how this developes.
Creative and management were always high on Benjamin and this new stable might push him to the top once again when he returns. As for the other two members, this seems like a good idea. Ziggler has been engaged in a feud with The Miz for the IC title at the moment. Swagger just made his jump to SmackDown and is clearly without a direction.
The stable sounds like a great collection of talented athletes. However, it lacks depth when it comes to mic skills. Apart from Ziggler, the others are only okay on the mic. There is, however, no shortage of wrestling skills or charisma. Ziggler can cut some of the most passionate promos and his skills should come in handy. It is also worth noting that The Showoff and Swagger had teamed up in the past.

Perhaps WWE can recruit a veteran like Kurt Angle to add instant star power to this stable. Angle can also act as a manager and a spokesperson for the group while wrestling occasionally. It will also be interesting to wonder if WWE ever runs with the Olympic gold medalist’s idea of a return. He stated he would love to return with a new version of Team Angle alongside American Alpha (h/t Inquisitr):
"“For me to go back (to WWE) and, if I do go back I’d love to be able to wrestle, but I know I can’t do it full time. I’m 47 years-old. And that’s why those guys (Chad Gable & Jason Jordan) would be perfect as my team, like a Team Angle, because they could do the wrestling for me until the big one comes. So it would be kind of cool to have that. I’m not going to say those guys are going to be my guys, but they’re almost ready to come up – if not they are ready.”"
American Alpha is doing very well on the main roster on their own, but it will never hurt to have Angle by their side.

We’ll see how the events unfold if all this happens and if we have a stable led by Angle and another lead by a former member of Team Angle – Shelton Benjamin. Whatever the case may be, Benjamin’s eventual return will set fire to a new revolution on SmackDown Live.
