WWE SmackDown Live Results: AJ Styles vs. Dean Ambrose Video Highlights

Did Dean Ambrose dethrone AJ Styles as WWE World Champion on Tuesday’s SmackDown?

On the September 20 episode of WWE SmackDown, Shane McMahon announced that one week from the show, AJ Styles would defend the WWE World Championship against Dean Ambrose. This is the one on one rematch that The Prodigal Son reference shortly after Backlash.

Styles is just over two weeks into his world title reign, but had to put the title on the line Tuesday night. Ambrose is getting his chance at the belt here, despite being in the No Mercy pay-per-view main event. This will see The Phenomenal One, if he walked out of SmackDown as champion, defend against The Lunatic Fringe and John Cena.

So, the match would take place on the September 27 episode of the Blue Brand. Styles and Ambrose went to battle, and Cena watched from ringside. Did he get involved?

Here’s a look at what happened in this title bout.

Ambrose and Styles went to ringside almost immediately and brawled to begin the match.

After the commercial break, we see Ambrose and Styles collide in the center of the ring. The most recent WWE World Champion would put a leg lock on the current title holder, who got to the ropes. Styles then locked in the Calf Crusher. Ambrose struggled to get to the ropes, so he slammed the former NJPW star’s head into the mat multiple times to break the hold.

Ambrose would use a reverse wheelbarrow move to get a near-fall on Styles. The Phenomenal One retaliated with a torture rack into a sit out powerbomb for a near-fall. Ambrose hit a huge lariat from the turnbuckle to fire back.

At ringside, Styles attacked Cena. When he tried getting the referee’s attention, Ambrose used an Okada roll for a pin attempt, but couldn’t succeed. Ambrose then took out Cena at ringside, but got rolled up with the Okada roll for the win.

After the match, Cena argued with Ambrose and hit him with the Attitude Adjustment. He did the same to Styles.

Styles remaining as champion isn’t a surprise. His reign is only a little over two weeks old and is far from over. Cena and Ambrose will have to work to pry the belt off of him at No Mercy.

The post-match antics will brew up some tension for the go-home show next Tuesday. The Leader of the Cenation is trying to prove that he can stick with the new kids, but will that be the case on October 9?
