WWE’s Top 10 Most Controversial Storylines
By Tim Sherry
1. Katie Vick
So far on this list, we’ve had it all. Sex addiction, rape, porn, suicide, the works. One subject, however, that was not breached was the one that Triple H partook in during his feud with Kane in 2002: necrophilia. Because nothing spells ratings like a grown man having sex with a corpse. I’d also assume that most advertisers loved that idea as well.
Quick back story. Kane and Triple H were warring over the World Heavyweight Championship in the Fall of 2002, and for some insane reason, the company introduced an angle in which Hunter accused Kane of murdering a former girlfriend named Katie Vick. This apparently happened when he was a younger man, to which Kane, as the babyface in this feud, admitted to. The Game took it a step further when he suggested that Kane had performed a sexual act on Katie post-mortem. And as if that degeneration wasn’t enough, Triple H then filmed a video where he strips naked and has sex with mannequin Katie while in her coffin at the funeral parlor.
In response to this madness, Kane and his buddy The Hurricane decided to get back at Hunter the logical way. They filmed their own video with Kane wearing a Triple H mask and receiving an enema. If there was no video evidence of this, people wouldn’t believe it. The WWE, in the only thing they did right on this subject, seemed to realize just how bad this angle went over with fans and ended the storyline rather quickly. But then insanely just 2 years later put Kane in an angle with Lita as an abusive boyfriend. You know, the guy who was accused of murder and rape is now a violent, bully husband who manipulated Lita into sleeping with him. Brilliant.

This angle really had it all. It was vulgar, insensitive, stupid, and most of all pointless. It didn’t help either guy in any way as Kane came out looking like a dumb criminal and Triple H just looked like a jerk. This was clearly an idea that never should have gotten out of a creative meeting but somehow did and damaged the industry if only temporarily.
