Who is WWE’s Next Breakout Superstar?
By Sarah Hirsch
The next breakout star for WWE is on the horizon. In a sea of new talent, who could possibly stand among the rest of them?
The new age of WWE is in the swing of things now that the Brand Extension has taken place. The events that have followed are now settled in. Most of the fans are sitting back and taking in the new phase of WWE. Along with this is the fact that with the influx of new talent that has occupied all three rosters (Raw, SD, NXT) there is a breakout star in this mix.
It’s no secret that the company already has so many stars whose potential has been limited or wasted. Names like Neville, Sami Zayn, and Tyler Breeze come to mind. While they, in fact, deserve more of WWE’s time there are others who are just getting started on the main roster. WWE is committed to making the Cruiserweight Division a staple on Raw, and with the success of the Cruiserweight Classic, it’s obvious that fans want to see more of this. How long the success of the Cruiserweights will last has yet to be known. I can only hope the fire of the revitalized division doesn’t die out for a long time. I still want to see the aforementioned names to succeed on the main roster too.
So when taking on this topic, I had to think about who I wanted to spotlight. I wanted to pick someone who hasn’t had NXT success but has the potential to become a big star for WWE. I wanted someone who fans liked and can relate to. I wanted a new name and a different star versus who someone else would pick if they did this topic. And so I picked one that I have really enjoyed recently and I hope that you, my reader, will agree with me.

Could WWE’s next breakout star be Rich Swann?
Is it a wild card pick? Perhaps so, but Swann isn’t someone to look over. He made a great impression on fans during the Cruiserweight Classic. He can move whether it’s to wrestle or dance. Swann has grown up watching the likes of Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio – which you can see the influence in his work. If those two legends could make an impact on the main roster, I think Swann can too.

Swann also has an inspiring background story that announcers have highlighted during his matches. When his parents died in a four-year span, Swann found himself hanging with the wrong crowd and that led to some bad decisions. Thankfully Swann was able to get out of his situation and uses pro wrestling to rise above the dark times in his life. Many pro wrestlers credit wrestling for saving them, and this is no exception. Everyone loves a good story, and Swann certainly has that.
Also, Swann’s character brings the fun back into wrestling. His energy makes you want to get up and dance along with him. I was watching the latest episode of NXT and I just loved the pairing with him and No Way Jose in the Dusty Rhodes Classic. I mean, two fun guys being paired together was genius. I don’t know if the team will advance to the finals, but I love the pairing and hope that something comes out of it for them.

The Cruiserweight Division is only the start of it for Swann. Could he climb the ladder of success in WWE? Swann has much potential and it would be a shame to see it waste away down the road. But with talent like TJ Perkins gracing the division, Swann has nothing to worry about right now. As long as he does his own thing and fans like him, the sky is the limit for him.
