Raw Women’s Championship Match
Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Bayley
Result: Bayley defeated Charlotte Flair via pinfall to become the new Raw Women’s Champion
Rating: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Prior to the match, Charlotte met up with Sasha Banks backstage. The longtime rivals exchanged words, with Charlotte seeming to think she got the better of the exchange. I’m sure that won’t come into play later!
The match itself seemed to get off to a slow start. It’s always baffled me that the final match of a three hour show would start off slow. The crowd is tired, but they want to be excited – give them a reason! Collar and elbow tie-ups have their place, but not so many so early in the main event. Just my opinion, keep things moving at a quick pace.
I like that Bayley has kind of turned into a modern, female Hulk Hogan. She starts eating a ton of offense, but then she hulks up (hugs up?) like it was nothing. It’s a great character trait for her, like her eternal optimism fuels her to make that comeback. In a cynical world full of pessimists (like me!), something like that can go a long way.
Of course, Charlotte comes back fairly quickly to regain the edge. The schoolgirl rollup into the turnbuckle looked insanely nasty. Then the moonsault off the barricade (in front of MLB star Bryce Harper, who seemed excited) seemed to be almost a knockout blow.
It’s worth pointing out that Bayley has a beautiful elbow drop, like her hero Randy Savage. Personally, I think it’s better than most other flying elbows out there.
The end of the match was such a schmozz that it actually took me out of the moment. Believe me, as a guy who was dressed in full Bayley get-up when she beat Sasha Banks in Brooklyn for the NXT Women’s Championship, I’m thrilled she’s the Raw Women’s Champion right now. But how much sweeter would it have been if it was like Brooklyn – a clean victory, with no question about who should have won?
So now we have a new Raw Women’s Champion in Bayley. She doesn’t know that Sasha Banks gave her an assist. Charlotte has beef with both Bayley and Sasha. And Dana Brooke is back from wherever she disappeared to to be in Charlotte’s corner again. With Emma back from injury, plus Nia Jax destroying everyone, the Raw women’s division is a busy place.
